On 18 July 1981, a Canadair CL-44D Swingtail cargo aircraft of the Argentine company Transporte Aéreo Rioplatense mysteriously disappeared over the Soviet Republic of Armenia while on a flight from Iran via Turkey in the direction of Cyprus. Four days later, on 22 July 1981, the Vremya TV broadcast in Moscow forwarded a report from the Soviet TASS news agency which stated that an aircraft of unidentified origin had entered Soviet territory in the vicinity of the Armenian city of Yerevan. According to the same release, the aircraft had ignored all calls from air traffic control and ended up crashing and burning after colliding with another Soviet aircraft. With this cryptic information began one of the most impressive and least known stories of Argentine civil aviation: the shooting down of the freighter registered as LV-JTN by the Soviet Air Defense Force (V-PVO). The episode, heavily covered up by Moscow, was part of a much larger geopolitical scenario: the clandestine transport of US-made weapons and spare parts that was taking place between Tel Aviv and Tehran by virtue of a secret agreement between the Iranian and Israeli governments. All this at a time when the former was subjected to an arms embargo in revenge for the hostage-taking that occurred in 1979 at the US Embassy in Tehran. The Islamic Republic of Iran, formed as a result of the Islamic Revolution that had broken out that same year, was an avowed enemy of Israel, whom it considered a mere Zionist regime that imposed itself in the occupation of Palestine. The Iranian religious leader Ruhollah Khomeini did not recognize the State of Israel, which he referred to simply as Little Satan. However, the Iranians desperately needed supplies of US weapons as a few months earlier, on 22 September 1980, they had been invaded by Iraq. The Israelis saw the possibility of carrying out a sideline business and thus embarked on a clandestine supply operation. The intelligence services of the Soviet Union soon became aware of the secret arms trafficking and decided to divert one of the involved aircraft into their airspace then force it to land in their territory with the aim of exposing the operation and all its protagonists. By interfering with radio communications and manipulating navigational aids, the KGB managed to divert the Argentine CL-44D from its route, with it ending up inside Soviet airspace. However, the Sukhoi Su-15TM interceptors of the V-PVO failed in their mission, and thus their ground control ordered the destruction of the target. The Soviet conspiracy of silence began after discovering that its Air Defense Force had destroyed an Argentine-flagged civil plane, with an Argentine crew, which was flying empty. Los orígenes de Aerolíneas Argentinas estuvieron signados por los mismos claroscuros que acompañaron a la empresa en sus siguientes décadas de existencia. Por eso tiene siete autores, cada uno con su propio estilo y su propia perspectiva histórica, todos convencidos de que Aerolíneas Argentinas es y ha sido siempre un fenómeno tan complejo que no admite un pensamiento único, sino una pluralidad de enfoques. La obra pone foco en los diez turbulentos años comprendidos entre 1945 y 1955, desde el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta la Revolución Libertadora que depuso al presidente Perón. En esa década el mundo estrenó el sistema de regulación surgido del Convenio de Aviación Civil Internacional (1944), fue creada la Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional (1945), fue fundada la International Air Transport Association (1945), la Argentina proclamó soberanía sobre su espacio aéreo y su tráfico aerocomercial (1945), la Fuerza Aérea Argentina se independizó del Ejército (1945), se consagró la Doctrina del Poder Aéreo Integrado (1945), se organizó la Secretaría de Aeronáutica como autoridad de aplicación civil y militar unificada (1945) y se estructuraron las Líneas Aéreas del Estado (1945). También en este período Perón ascendió a la presidencia (1946), se lanzó el Primer Plan Quinquenal de gobierno con particular énfasis en la construcción de aeropuertos (1946), se constituyeron las aerolíneas de capital mixto ALFA, ZONDA, FAMA y Aeroposta Argentina (1946-1947), se declaró el Transporte Aéreo como servicio público esencial (1949), se creó la empresa Aerolíneas Argentinas (1950) y se la puso a funcionar bajo un modelo absolutamente estatista (1950-1955). Aerolíneas Argentinas fue forjada en una verdadera fragua de conflictos cuyo conocimiento resulta fundamental para comprender la empresa actual y el moderno sistema aerocomercial argentino.

El 18 de julio de 1981 un avión de carga Canadair CL-44D Swingtail de la empresa argentina Transporte Aéreo Rioplatense desapareció misteriosamente sobre la República Soviética de Armenia mientras realizaba un vuelo entre Teherán (Irán) y Larnaca (Chipre). Cuatro días después, un noticiero televisivo informó en Moscú que un avión de procedencia no identificada había ingresado en territorio de la Unión Soviética cerca de la ciudad armenia de Ereván y que, tras chocar en el aire con otro aparato soviético, se había estrellado e incendiado. Esa críptica información daba inicio a una de las historias más impactantes y menos conocidas de la aviación civil argentina: la del encubrimiento del derribo deliberado de un carguero civil que estaba siendo utilizado como transporte clandestino de armas norteamericanas entre Tel Aviv y Teherán en virtud de un acuerdo secreto celebrado entre los gobiernos iraní e israelí para burlar el embargo de material bélico impuesto por Estados Unidos a la recién formada República Islámica de Irán. Al encubrimiento soviético pronto se sumaron los gobiernos de Israel, Irán y los Estados Unidos. Todos procuraron mantener el asunto en el más cerrado de los secretos. Lo mismo hizo el gobierno argentino que se abstuvo de denunciar ante los organismos internacionales el asesinato de tres de sus ciudadanos para no resentir las relaciones diplomáticas y económicas con Moscú, por entonces el principal comprador de cereales de nuestro país. Tras cinco años de investigación, el historiador aeronáutico Gustavo Marón ha logrado exclaustrar archivos diplomáticos y documentos secretos con los que ha podido desentrañar este verdadero crimen de la Guerra Fría encubierto por cinco Estados.
