Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1.3, Berlin School of Economics and Law (Institute of Management Berlin), course: MBA European-Asian Management - Study of the impact, causes and solutions for Nokia's strategy worn-out in the hypercompetitive smartphone segment, language: English, abstract: The focus of this thesis is to study the impact, causes and solutions for Nokia's strategy worn-out in the hypercompetitive smartphone segment. Based on industry experts interviews, internal documentation and market reports and analyses, the reasons for Nokia's strategic drift are regrouped around two concepts: industry platform and dynamic capabilities. Three potential solutions, benchmarked from different industries, are suggested to avoid drift situations in similar market environments. Finally, the scenario analysis of Nokia's current strategic answers to its drift shows the non-sustainability of Windows Phone's choice as unique smartphone platform. Corrective suggestions include essentially the leverage of Nokia's services store, the creation of a cross-platform payment and banking solution and the coring towards vehicle and home entertainment industries.

General Motors and IBM have been battered to their cores. Jack Welch, the chairman of General Electric, called the frenzied competition of the 1980's "a white knuckle decade" and said the 1990s would be worse. In this pathbreaking book that will define this new age of "hypercompetition," Richard D'Aveni reveals how competitive moves and countermoves escalate with such ferocity today that the traditional sources of competitive advantage can no longer be sustained. To compete in this dynamic environment, D'Aveni argues that a company must fundamentally shift its strategic focus. He constructs a brilliant operational model that shows how firms move up "escalation ladders" as advantage is continually created, eroded, destroyed, and recreated through strategic maneuvering in four arenas of competition. Using this "Four Arena" analysis, D'Aveni explains how competitors engage in a struggle for control by seeking leadership in the arenas of "price and quality," "timing and know-how," "stronghold creation/invasion," and "deep pockets." Winners set the pace in each of these four competitive battlegrounds. Using hundreds of detailed examples from hypercompetitive industries such as computers, software, automobiles, airlines, pharmaceuticals, toys and soft drinks, D'Avenie demonstrates how hypercompetitive firms succeed in dynamic markets by disrupting the status quo and creating a continuous series of temporary advantages. They seize the initiative, D'Aveni explains, by employing a set of strategies he calls the "New 7-S's" Superior Stakeholder Satisfaction, Strategic Soothsaying, Speed, Surprise, Shifting the Rules of Competition, Signaling Strategic Intent, and Simultaneous and Sequential Thrusts. Paradoxically, firms must destroy their competitive advantages to gain advantage, D'Aveni shows. Long-term success depends not on sustaining an advantage through a static, long-term strategy, but instead on formulating a dynamic strategy for the creating, destruction, and recreation of short-term advantages. America must embrace the new reality of hypercompetition, D'Aveni concludes in a compelling analysis of the potential chilling effect of American antitrust laws on competitiveness. This masterful book, essentially an operating manual of strategy and tactics for a new era, will be required reading for managers, planners, consultants, academics, and students of hypercompetitive industries.

Mobility is not just the fastest-growing technology in the history of mankind. With potentially four billion people being connected by mobile devices by the end of 2009, and many people having their first internet experience over a mobile device rather than a PC, mobility is changing people’s lives for the better. This is a huge responsibility and test for companies in the business. But Nokia’s CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, is claiming that his company has always been good at adapting to both change and challenges. This work examines how well the world largest cell phone manufacturer is prepared to maintain customer’s continuous trust in their company and products; what is their strategy to continue success while changing. The works examines in three steps Nokia’s strategy execution: the corporate strategy level, the business-level strategy, and the marketing strategy level. Finally, the analysis results are collectively examined in the SWOT-analysis before drawing the conclusion for which of the various generic competitive strategies Nokia is deploying.

Dynamic Capabilities And Strategic Management written by David J. Teece and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-26 with Business & Economics categories.

How do firms compete? How do firms earn above normal returns? What's needed to sustain superior performance long term? An increasingly powerful answer to these fundamental questions of business strategy lies in the concept of dynamic capabilities. These are the skills, processes, routines, organizational structures, and disciplines that enable firms to build, employ, and orchestrate intangible assets relevant to satisfying customer needs, and which cannot be readily replicated by competitors. Enterprises with strong dynamic capabilities are intensely entrepreneurial. They not only adapt to business ecosystems; they also shape them through innovation, collaboration, learning, and involvement. David Teece was the pioneer of the dynamic capabilities perspective. It is grounded in 25 years of his research, teaching, and consultancy. His ideas have been influential in business strategy, management, and economics, and are relevant to innovation, technology management, and competition policy. Through his consultancy and advisory work he has also brought these ideas to bear in business and policy making around the world. This book is the clearest and most succinct statement of the core ideas of dynamic capabilities. Teece explains their genesis, application, and how they offer an alternative approach to much conventional strategic thinking grounded in simplistic and outdated understandings of industrial organizations and the foundations of competitive advantage. Accessibly written and presented, it will be an invaluable and stimulating tool for all those who want to understand this important contribution to strategic thinking, be they MBA students, academics, managers, or consultants.

Each briefing is structured the same way, beginning with an outline of the consulting mission and its content before examining the theoretical background, before setting out a complete and practical methodology to complete the mission along with all the tools you will need along the way.
