“A joy . . . covers the period from the Great War to the modern era with diversions into air shows and some of the personalities of the Guild.” —War History Online Flight Through the Ages was the title of the first annual exhibition of the Guild of Aviation Artists in 1971. This book celebrates 50 years of exhibitions and includes paintings by almost one hundred Guild artists, past and present, depicting aircraft from the earliest airborne activities through to the present day. There are balloons and airships, fighters and bombers from both world wars, including Spitfires and Lancasters, airliners from the early years of air travel through Concorde and on to the present day. There are also gliders and helicopters and the current generation of advanced aircraft among some 200 illustrations, most in full color. Artists include some of the most well-known British artists of their day and the works display imagination and creativity in a variety of different styles and treatments that bring flying machines to life. There are historical scenes and aircraft in their natural environment, showing action and some of the aviators and others from the world of aviation. There is a short history of the Guild and a step-by-step guide to one artist’s approach to the subject. “A magnificent series of images in a variety of styles . . . This is a lovely book in which to browse, feast your eyes and ponder on the magic of aviation.” —Flying in Ireland “Inspiration, pure and simple . . . this book provides a luscious ready reference of many of aviation’s most beautiful creations, each in a moment in time that draws us into its story.” —IPMS/USA

World War II Aviation Artwork, and the stories behind these beautiful birds, is a curated collection of WWII aircraft photography and artwork. During my first WWII airplane photography session, I desired more than an ordinary photograph. I felt the necessity to create works of art from the thirty four vintage aircraft that I had photographed. By applying my digital imaging and commercial photography skills, I created this unique photographic/artistic process. Besides the artwork, I researched, discovered, and acquired historical images, aircraft specifications, unfamiliar background information and a few personal stories of some of the people that kept these planes flying.Even though these WWII planes were instrumental in the war, I was inspired to showcase the ingenuity of early aviation. It was and still is amazing to me how many different types of aircraft were built in such a short period of time. Modifications and upgrades were constantly being applied to these aircraft between 1939 and 1945. I wanted to portray that innovation and creativity of Aviation during a difficult time in our history through my artistic abilities. This reader-friendly book utilizes the Times Roman font in a larger than normal font size for easy reading as well. For the same reason the gutter or enlarged center area was used to keep the pages flat while observing the artwork. The unique aircraft artwork I have created for WWII Aviation Artwork and the Stories Behind These Beautiful Birds, has been combined with historical images, and enhanced with personal WWII stories from survivors of the war, to bring you a coffee table book you will enjoy reading and re-reading while sharing with your friends and loved ones.

“The thoughtful text and assortment of paintings illustrate just over a century of military aviation, from those early biplanes . . . to modern drones.” —Military Model Scene Barely a decade passed from the Wright Brothers’ first powered flight to aircraft becoming lethal instruments of war. The Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service took off in the very early days of The Great War and captured the public’s imagination and admiration. Sydney and Richard Carline happened to be both pilots and artists as was Frenchman Henri Farre. Their works inspired celebrated painters like Sir John Lavery who took to the skies in an airship in the First World War. Feeding on the demand for works depicting this new dimension of warfighting, a new genre of art was born which has remained popular ever since. During the Second World War, the paintings of Paul Nash stood out as did Eric Ravilious who, ironically, died in an air crash. War artist Albert Richards dropped with British paratroopers on D-Day. Post-war, paintings by leading British and international artists graphically illustrate conflicts such as the Falklands, Bosnia and the Gulf War. John Fairley has brought together a dazzling collection of art works covering over 100 years of air warfare, enhanced by lively and informative text. The result is a book that is visually and historically satisfying. “This book is highly recommended based upon the outstanding prose, spectacular artwork, and coverage of the histories of the conflicts covered.” —IPMS/USA “Taken together, the paintings and descriptions present a compelling tableau of the first century of military operations in the third dimension.” —Aviation History Magazine

American WWII Aviation seen through advertising. In 1944 George Grod, a strip cartoon, modeling and aviation enthusiast, discovered with amazement some American magazines which an MP billeted near his village lent him. What he liked best were the gleaming advertisements scattered throughout the pages. In the eighties, during an "old papers" fair George came across some old numbers of Life Magazine. Nothing had changed; his emotion was still there intact. He started an unbridled search for original magazines dating back to between 1942 and 1945. For many long years, he tried to find out more about these obscure illustrators. All this now came together once again all so naturally in this search in which we see the return of all his great themes - aviation, kits, cartoon strips, the love of art and even the cinema. The book is not seeking to be a mere collection of beautiful pictures all strung together or a sample from a huge collection; it is above all the testimonial of a period, the reflection of that immense war effort the American people made during the last World War, seen through the kaleidoscope of publicity.
