A physician's job is to know the human body and its functions in terms of Prakritisthata (homeostasis). The four cornerstones of diagnostic medicine, each essential for understanding homeostasis, are: anatomy (the structure of the human body), physiology (functions of Dosha, Dhatu & Mala), pathology (what can go wrong with the anatomy and physiology) and psychology (thought and behavior). Once the doctor knows what is normal and can measure the patient's current condition against those norms, she or he can then determine the patient's particular departure from homeostasis and the degree of departure. This is called the diagnosis. Once a diagnosis has been reached, the doctor is able to propose a management plan, which will include treatment as well as plans for follow-up. From this point on, in addition to treating the patient's condition, the doctor educates the patient about the causes, progression, outcomes, and possible treatments of his ailments, as well as providing advice for maintaining health. In order to diagnose the disease on the basis of Ayurvedic principles, the physician should have to work very hard to know the subtle changes occurring inside the body due to the imbalance of Dosha. To become perfect in Ayurvedic diagnosis, the physician needs to understand Dosha Vikalpa (Dravyataha-Gunataha-Karmataha Vriddhi of Dosha), Dhatu Vaishamya (the quantum of vitiation, the status of Dhatu & Srotas), Agni Sthiti and nature of Ama. At the beginning, most of the students and practioners find it is very hard to diagnose a disease on the basis of Ayurvedic principles or if they diagnosed, still they may not feel satisfied. I think we have failed to taught & train the students to do Ayurvedic diagnosis. The method of diagnosis in Ayurveda mainly depends on the in-depth understanding of Dosha & Dooshya. The process of diagnosis begins when the patient consults the doctor and presents a set of complaints (the symptoms). If the patient is unconscious, this condition is the de facto complaint. The doctor then obtains further information from the patient himself (and from those who know him, if present) about the patient's symptoms, his previous state of health, living conditions, and so forth.

This textbook explains clearly the Ayurvedic understanding of pathology and how to diagnosis the different stages of disease in the body and mind. Based on the functional nature of Ayurvedic Anatomy & Physiology Ayurvedic pathology recognizes several steps before disease as we know it in the West manifests. Hence, a profound understanding of pathology allows Ayurveda to prevent disease before it becomes “disease”. Ayurveda is truly a preventive medicine when understood correctly. This book contains color photos to help students understand diagnosis better. Pulse and tongue diagnosis are clearly explained in a simple manner. There is also a special section on clinical psychology as per the Caraka Samhita. All the classical methods of understanding disease are explained in this textbook which is the result of the authors 27 years of practice.Perhaps the most important aspect of Ayurveda today is the rich variety of therapeutic approaches integrated in the system. Therapeutics in Ayurveda is not a hodgepodge of different therapies; rather it is a comprehensive vision of health and well-being supported by nature's abundant wealth of therapeutic substances. The fundamental vision of therapeutics is based on the functional vision of Ayurveda. This textbook explains in a clear, linear manner the two main approaches and many different categories of treatments available in Ayurvedic medicine, the basis of which is lifestyle therapies.“Pathology and Diagnosis in Ayurveda” by Vaidya Atreya Smith is Volume Two in a four volume series of textbooks for Western students of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda, the science of life, holistic medicine offers a complete solution with medicines, diet and lifestyle. The radical shift occurred in defining health encourages the medical fraternity of modern times to look deeply into empirically evolved ayurvedic techniques for the maintenance of positive health. The recent WHO report says that 70% of the world population is using herbal medicines for their primary health care. In last decade the use of herbal medicines increased tremendously. Safe and effective prescribing is a basis of proper patient care. Many pocket books or practical prescriber available for allopathic medicine in market but very few for Ayurveda. In order to fulfill this we have undertaken this task. It is essential to get the practical training from the Guru (Teacher) in order to become perfect in Ayurvedic diagnosis, as evidenced from the Vagbhata’s citation “The proficiency comes by continuous practice just like the the genuineness of diamond etc. can’t be known by mere reading of books”. The fundamental principles for treating any disease are Bio-purification, Palliative medicine and avoiding the causative factors. Considering this, the author tried to incorporate these triad principles of treatment. For every diseases, there is explanation regarding causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, line of treatment, Panchakarma treatment, Palliative treatment, formulations, Prescriptions, Pathyaapathya. I hope the Vaidyas will become efficient by practicing the remedies, regime and diet described in this book.

In addition to offering a comprehensive understanding of the art of tongue diagnosis, this book includes ancient and modern healing practices based on Healing Tastes, Herbal Therapies and Dietary Protocols. The knowledge contained in this book is invaluable for supporting oneself and others on the journey to wholeness. The educational foundation of the book prepares us to really understand the meaning and use of tongue diagnosis. The ancient art of tongue diagnosis, as this book defines it, is the science of the shape, shadings and markings of the tongue, which describe the current state of an individual`s health, as well as their inherited constitution. The potential of tongue diagnosis is that it gives a non-invasive way to measure the tissue integrity of the body, especially the Agni of the digestive system or the Fire or strength of the digestive system. This can be assessed by simply observing the color and structure of the tongue, then we have a very simple way to take preventive steps to correct those imbalances, and we have a very simple feedback system, meaning the tongue`s color, size, shape and shading, to let us know how successful our approach has been.
