The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics has withstood thus far every attempt by experimentalists to show that it does not describe data. We discuss the SM in some detail, focusing on the mechanism of fermion mixing, which represents one of its most intriguing aspects. We discuss how this mechanism can be tested in b-quark decays, and how b decays can be used to extract information on physics beyond the SM. We review experimental techniques in b physics, focusing on recent results and highlighting future prospects. We report a search for B decays to selected final states with the [eta]c meson: B" 2!K"[eta]c[pi]+[pi]-, B" 2!K"[eta]c[omega], B" 2!K"[eta]c[eta] and B" 2!K"[eta]c[pi]0. The analysis is based on 772 × 106 BB-bar pairs collected at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the studied B decay modes, independent of intermediate resonances, in the range (0.6-5.3) × 10-4. We also search for molecular-state candidates in the D0D*-bar0 - D-bar0D*0, D0D-bar0 + D-bar0D0 and D*0D*-bar0 + D*-bar0D*0 combinations, neutral partners of the Z(3900)" and Z(4020)", and a poorly understood state X(3915) as possible intermediate states in the decay chain, and set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of branching fractions to the mentioned intermediate states and decay branching fractions of these states in the range (0.6-6.9) × 10-5.

In recent studies of inclusive $B$ decays, it has been suggested that either $B$ mesons decay much more copiously to final states with no open charm than currently assumed, or $B(D0̂ \to K-̂\pi+̂)$ has to be reduced significantly. This note takes the experimental $B(D0̂ \to K-̂\pi+̂)$ at its face value and estimates $B(b\to$ no open charm) using complementary methods: one accounts for the $c$ quark in $b\to c$ transitions, the other accounts for the $\bar c$ quark in $b\to c\bar c s$ transitions. Through cancellation of errors, the average gives our best estimate of $B(b\to$ no open charm), and the difference measures the consistency. The results of the methods are consistent with each other, strongly suggesting a much enhanced $B(b\to$ no open charm). This observation indicates that non-perturbative QCD effects are probably causing a sizable fraction of the $b\to c\bar cs$ transitions to be seen as charmless $b\to s$ processes, contrary to smaller traditional expectations. This mechanism has generally been overlooked and may explain the existing experimental data within the framework of the standard model. We then briefly discuss implications on baryon production governed by $b\to c\bar cs$ processes, rare hadronic $B$ decays and CP violation studies.

The study of rare hadronic B decays at LHCb and at the planned Super-B factories is a valueable tool in the search for new physics. The variety of hadronic decay channels allows for over-constraining measurements of flavour-changing neutral currents. The author discusses several aspects of new physics in rare hadronic B decays. In the first part of the book, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with Minimal Flavor Violation is analysed. In this model, large effects can occur in rare B decays due to tan(beta)-enhanced corrections which have to be resummed to all orders. The known resummation formulae are generalised beyond the decoupling limit and novel effects in couplings involving genuine supersymmetric particles are studied. In the second part of the book, the possibility of probing new physics in electroweak penguins via hadronic B decays is discussed. Such kind of new physics is suggested by puzzling data in B K, pi decays. The author shows that a measurement of the purely isospin-violating decays Bs phi, pi(rho) could shed light on this puzzle. A model-independent study and a study of concrete well-motivated new physics scenarios are performed.

The authors report on a search for flavor-changing neutral current decays of B mesons B →??−K{sup {+-}} and B →?+?−K*° using data obtained in the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) 1992--1993 data taking run. To reduce the amount of background in the data the authors use precise tracking information from the CDF silicon vertex detector to pinpoint the location of the decay vertex of the B candidate, and accept only events which have a large decay time. They compare this data to a B meson signal obtained in a similar fashion, but where the muon pairs originate from? decays, and calculate the relative branching ratios. In absence of any indication of flavor-changing neutral current decays they set an upper limits of BR(B →?+?−K{sup {+-}})

Theoretical predictions for B decay rates are rewritten in terms of the Upsilon meson mass instead of the b quark mass, using a modified perturbation expansion. The theoretical consistency is shown both at low and high orders. This method improves the behavior of the perturbation series for inclusive and exclusive decay rates, and the largest theoretical error in the predictions coming from the uncertainty in the quark mass is eliminated. Applications to the determination of CKM matrix elements, moments of inclusive decay distributions, and the[bar B][yields] X[sub s][gamma] photon spectrum are discussed.
