The purpose of this study was to determine the images of aging of a small sample of Early Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1951. The Baby Boomers are a generation consisting of those born between 1946 and 1964. This study focuses on a narrower range of birth years in order to capture the images of aging of those now 60 and over who came of age in the 1960s and early 1970s. They represent the first wave of the Baby Boom Generation to reach age 65, society's marker of "old age." Baby Boomers are the largest generation in history and currently 10,000 of them are turning 65 every day. The questions posed in this study were to explore how these Early Baby Boomers expect to age, how their generational experience influences their image of aging, and how that image differs from that of previous generations. Using a phenomenological and hermeneutical research method, eight men and eight women with like ethnic, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics were interviewed. Through recordings and verbatim transcriptions the collective meaning of life, aging influences, fears, and expected life spans were determined. The collective results were compared to literature of aging stereotypes of previous generations. This select group reported that they will not age and are surprised when experiencing small signs of aging. Work is what brings meaning to their lives and they have no plans of retiring. They expect to maintain control over the length and quality of their lives. These Early Baby Boomers expect to establish a new image of aging. As the numbers of Baby Boomers age and lifespan lengthens, unavoidable losses will occur. Researchers predict an increase in depression, addiction, and dementia. The Early Baby Boomer expects their needs to be met and as those losses occur they will increasingly seek mental health professionals to "fix" their emotional responses. It is important for mental health professionals to understand the unique generational lens from which Boomers view aging in order to provide quality assessment, recommendations, referral, and treatment.

It is fair to say that most baby boomers addressing retirement will have different types of income, education, and aspirations. This second book in the series REINVENTING RETIREMENT BABY BOOMER STYLE is based on the stories from the people met or known by the author. The intent of this book is to engage the nearly-retired or retired baby boomer to get the creative juices going; this book will give you ideas to help stimulate some imaginative planning. Retirement plans are constantly changing, but having a looser outline to follow would assist and lead towards the direction baby boomers ultimately want. This book is intended to help the baby boomer generation find ways to think outside the box, find a lifestyle that suits their unique needs as an individuals, and know that they do not need to mold their retirement plans using the traditional cookie cutter preferences. For those of you currently engaged in a "working retirement," try to make your work more enjoyable, and think of ways to pamper yourself. For heaven's sake, do not worry about what anyone else thinks because we have all earned the privilege of spending our time the way we choose.

CROSSING THE BORDER INTO OLD AGE.THE BABY BOOMER CHALLENGE BY JULIA COLE KNEISSLThe generational upheavals of our sixty to one hundred year olds will rise significantly as the first wave of baby boomers become eligible for retirement. Many retirement issues are addressed and the lifestyles of our older age group will all be affected by the new ideas and energy of our younger members. As a former Professor of Gerontology, Julia was only partly prepared for her old age. She found that books on aging were written by researchers who were not retired yet. After fourteen years of retirement Julia now feels qualified to write about the years that are within her experience. She has taken a psychosocial approach to the problems and choices of living, with an emphasis on redefining oneself as an older person. Many men and women have shared their experiences. The book offers practical suggestions. Yes - the baby boomers are entering the zone of old age - a zone where we place old people so that we don't have to worry about them. Who are these upstarts coming forth with new ideas and high expectations? Why are our feathers being ruffled? We have grown quite comfortable in our time zone. This new generation entering our sacred space will be disassociating themselves from the stigma of aging. As people are living longer the numbers celebrating ninety and one hundred year old birthdays are increasing and even more significantly the numbers of men are also increasing, but male specific services and activities are lagging far behind.Julia encourages you to look “outside of the box” in viewing aging issues. How do you downsize? Give up the car? (Without feeling lost and resentful.) How can you turn these into positive experiences? Are you wealthy enough to retire or too scared to retire? What can you expect from your body? Is it ok to have a drink of alcohol at night? What about your mental abilities- are you doomed to have dementias? Memory loss? How will we decide when it is time to stop driving? One of the biggest demands will be that of housing and lifestyles, with aging in place being the most popular option. It is generally acknowledged that our baby boomers will be working longer, so a retirement life style will be at a later age, probably not before seventy-five. The market will be hungry for this generation as the competition for services mounts. Demands for apartment living and food service will change. Julia writes, “The youngest amongst us (70's and 80's) remember well the wars we waged against established traditions. We were part of the one hundred and twenty years that it took for women to gain equal voting rights in this country. We picketed “Men Only” Clubs where business was carried out over leisurely expense paid lunches. We were part of the feminist movement (even if we did not burn our bras and go to Woodstock). We turned the position of the "at home" Mom who did "nothing" into the working Mom who did both. We saw women crack and transcend the glass ceiling in the work place. Have we thought about how we can transcend the glass ceiling of prejudice against the older person? We need to start by understanding ourselves, who we are collectively, but more importantly as individuals. If we can learn about the resources available to ourselves, and always remember that we raised our children to be self-sufficient and independent, then we owe it to ourselves and our families to maintain a quality of living which maintains as much independence as our health and financial resources will allow.” As a retired Professor Emeritus of Gerontology, Julia found that most authors were young. Julia sees that this new generation will be disassociating themselves from the stigma of aging.Julia encourages you to look “outside of the box” in viewing aging issues. How do you downsize? Give up the car? Prepare for retirement? What can you expect from your body? What about your mental abilities?

Through the use of survey data and qualitative interviews with baby boomers living in London and Paris, the authors demonstrate the diversity of the boomer generation - most notably in terms of housing experiences but equally in areas such as work and consumption. The contrasting experiences within the two cities studied provide evidence that is at odds with the commonly accepted view that baby boomers are culturally dominant and have a monopoly of financial wealth.Baby Boomers: A Mobile Generation is important reading for students of sociology, social policy, demography and social gerontology. Written in an accessible style, it should also appeal to members of the general public who themselves are part of this generation.

The Baby Boom generation is leading the nation into the future. Having elected one of its own to the White House, this generation - the largest and best educated in history - is poised to place its imprint on the 21st century. Cheryl Russell - acclaimed author of 100 Predictions for the Baby Boom and former editor-in-chief of American Demographics - meets the challenge of predicting the daunting future of this most singular of generations. Russell perceptively shows why members of the Baby Boom generation, born between 1946 and 1964, have always embraced their independence. This individualism has become the master trend of our time. But the Baby Boom generation is now finding itself in the midst of a midlife crisis as it is pulled in one direction by its sense of individualism and in another by its children. Baby Boomers, known for following the beat of their own drummer, are suddenly awakening to the urgent need to bring society together for the sake of their children's future. The Baby Boom generation prizes individualism so highly that it has become the first generation of what Cheryl Russell calls "free agents." Like Curt Flood - baseball's first free agent - the Baby Boomers play by their own rules. Free agents have become both the creators and the eager customers of a new, fast-paced, hotly competitive "personalized economy" that seizes on cutting-edge technologies to produce the innovative and custom-designed products and services the world so sorely needs. Will this personalized economy bring prosperity to Americans? Can the free agents of the Baby Boom generation make life better for all of us? Will they learn to work together for the good of society? Most important, what kind of society are the Baby Boomers leaving to their children? In a culture that values individualism above all, what will happen to the unprepared millions who are trapped in the margins of society? In a world where the disparity between rich and poor has grown dramatically what kind of tensions will arise? The Baby Boom generation is now laying the foundation for the next century. The choices it makes today will reshape America either into a society of turmoil and danger or into a brave new world of cooperation and prosperity. In this landmark work, Cheryl Russell presents the blueprint by which the Baby Boom generation will leave its legacy for the future
