Netty, a naive teenage farm girl, is given in marriage to an older brutal opportunist disguised as a successful citizen during the Prohibition years in Sussex County, New Jersey. After years of enslavement, Netty flees into the night from her husband and travels back to her parents' farm. While there, she rescues an unfamiliar damaged creature she finds in a cave in the woods, falling in love with the alien she names Baby. Together they find happiness despite the changes to Netty's body due to her proximity to the unusual creature. Damaged by entry into Earth's atmosphere while pregnant, the confused creature forgets the purpose of his mission, appearing unconcerned with the disappearance of his offspring while savoring the joy of the love he shares with Netty.
