He had to grope his way through a mass of irrelevant literature contained in the reports of Scientific Societies, to purchase many very expensive works, and, with much difficulty, to obtain access to certain rare old volumes. The study of diatoms is attracting an ever increasing circle of microscopists. By the discovery of fossil diatoms geologists are solving many important and difficult problems. The subject is one of surpassing interest. The field of study is vast, is largely unexplored, and is within the reach of all.
