Jimmy Bellis was born and raised just below the poverty line in the slums of southside Birchwood. He was regularly subjected to the back-alley influences of the local vagrant degenerates and wannabes as a child and spent his years as a teenager running the streets as a rogue trickster destined to a life of crime and subterfuge. Being the black sheep of his broken family and the unsung hero of an illicit counterculture, in Jims world, the only kinds of friends that he benefits from are the ones willing to do whatever it takes to help him make ends meet. Friends with Benefits is the entertainingly bold and original saga about Jims struggles in life. From his desperate attempts and pursuits to be part of his only sons life to his courageous strides toward converting from being a career criminal to a productive member of society, Jim realizes that there is nothing in life more beneficial than having friends in all the right places.

Minds Stayed On Freedom written by Tyler Bay and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-04 with Social Science categories.

Minds Stayed on Freedom is a vivid portrait of the civil rights struggle in one Mississippi county. While the national Movement has been painted in broad strokes by journalists and scholars, here the experiences of ordinary people bring definition to the lived texture of the Civil Rights Movement. Interviewed by local youths, Movement veterans recount how they overcame their fear in the face of terrorist resistance and collectively transformed the political and social fabric of their community. Their stories were repeated across the rural South, although seldom with the force and vigor experienced in Holmes County, located in the Mississippi plantation country. The teenagers who conducted this oral history project strike a rare balance between poignant prose and pathbreaking research. The detailed picture that emerges from the interviews brings into sharp relief issues that remain hazy in studies of national scope: the crucial resource of black land ownership, the limited extent of church involvement, the commitment to armed self-defense, the role of women, divisions of social class within the Movement, the range of white response and retaliation, and the interplay between direct action and legal tactics. Minds Stayed on Freedom provides plenty of fodder for academic analysis, but the interviews retain a raw, dramatic power. As project advisor Jay MacLeod of the Rural Organizing and Cultural Center writes in his introduction, "The drama in Holmes County began when a group of black farmers attempted to register to vote. Whites retaliated, pitting themselves directly against a small group of courageous black activists. The two sides battled each other. But they also battled for the hearts and minds of the black population. The tiny local Movement, armed with a vision of the future, tried to draw its people off the sidelines and into active involvement. Whites ntried to keep Holmes County blacks in their 'place' with a campaign of terror and intimidation. Minds Stayed

First published in 1972, The Foxfire Book was a surprise bestseller that brought Appalachia's philosophy of simple living to hundreds of thousands of readers. Whether you wanted to hunt game, bake the old-fashioned way, or learn the art of successful moonshining, The Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center had a contact who could teach you how with clear, step-by-step instructions. Today, Foxfire's mission remains the same, and The Foxfire Book of Simple Living is both a rich look back at five decades of collected wisdom, as well as an intriguing look forward at the artists and craftsman who are working to preserve the Appalachian tradition for future generations. We hear from doll and soap makers who continue to use and adapt the time-tested methods outlined in The Foxfire Book, not to mention hunters, blacksmiths, musicians, and carpenters whose respect for those who preceded them enhances their own art. We see how the mountain community has responded to the films, books, and plays that have tried (and sometimes failed) to represent them. And, above all, by listening to the voices of those who came before, we celebrate the people who have preserved the stories, crafts, and customs that define life in the Appalachian mountain region.

It’s January 1960. Leland Thomson plays his cello with incredible passion and sensitivity, demonstrating a skill that far outstretches his age and circumstance. The cello came from his uncle, but the gift was from God. Attached to the gift was a dream to play before vast audiences, a dream that seemed well beyond the reach of a sixteen-year-old boy from the hills of Arkansas. Life is a challenge in the hills, even more so if you are sawmill trash. Your lot is cast low and thrusts upon you daily challenges of race, poverty, abuse, and mistrust. Only by strong convictions do the Thomsons manage a simple yet contented lifestyle. On a trip into town, they meet Ralph Watkins, a regent at the New York Conservatory of Music. When Ralph hears Leland play, he outlays a plan to have Leland play at Carnegie Hall. But when Ralph discovers Leland’s practice of praying each time he plays, to honor the source of the gift, Ralph demands he stop, only to realize what he asks separates Leland from that which gives him his identity and ability. Leland Thomson: A Gift, a Cello and a Dream is a captivating story full of country charm and wit. It follows Leland as he fulfills his dream while proving where you come from matters less than who you are.

Monte Walsh has never met a horse he couldn’t ride, and Chet Rollins has never met one he couldn’t rope. For a decade they are unbeatable and inseparable, working as trail hands throughout the West until finally settling with Cal Brennan’s Slash Y. Their rough cowboy ethics see them through every imaginable challenge: blizzards, rustlers, outlaws, and card games gone wrong. Partial to pretty women, gambling, and practical jokes, Monte is often on the receiving end of trouble, while Chet is always there to break him out of jail or serve as a decoy until Monte can get out of town in a hurry. As the West begins to change, however—the automobile replacing the horse, the herds breaking up—the two friends part ways. Chet marries and goes on to become a successful merchant, banker, and politician; but Monte, unable to imagine anything but the cowboy’s way of life, refuses to the end to leave the range.

Brothers And Keepers written by John Edgar Wideman and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-06 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

“A rare triumph” (The New York Times Book Review), this powerful memoir about the divergent paths taken by two brothers is a classic work from one of the greatest figures in American literature: a reflection on John Edgar Wideman’s family and his brother’s incarceration—a classic that is as relevant now as when originally published in 1984. A “brave and brilliant” (The Philadelphia Inquirer) portrait of lives arriving at different destinies, the classic John Edgar Wideman memoir, Brothers and Keepers, is a haunting portrait of two brothers—one an award-winning writer, the other a fugitive wanted for a robbery that resulted in a murder. Wideman recalls the capture of his younger brother, Robby, details the subsequent trials that resulted in a sentence of life in prison, and provides vivid views of the American prison system. A gripping, unsettling account, Brothers and Keepers weighs the bonds of blood, affection, and guilt that connect Wideman and his brother and measures the distance that lies between them. “If you care at all about brotherhood and dignity…this is a must-read book” (The Denver Post). With a new afterword by his brother Robert Wideman, recently released after more than fifty years in prison.

"Red Rock" by Thomas Nelson Page is a Gothic romance novel. The story covers an important era of US history (1865-1877). The plot is set in the Red Rock region where the Grays and Carys lived lies too far from the centers of modern progress to be laid down on any map that will be accessible. It was a good land in those old times—a rolling country, lying at the foot of the blue mountain spurs, with forests and fields; and rich meadows filled with fat cattle.
