This study explores the relationship between language selection and identity construction in contemporary Indonesia through an examination of the function of English, a language that still receives stigma from many Indonesians and the government, particularly in Indonesian popular texts published after 1998. Utilizing hybrid critical approaches and interpretive textual analysis, I examine how the socio-political situation has influenced language selection in the period following Suharto's rule (1966-1998), popularly known as the Reformasi era. During both the Suharto (the New Order era) and the post-Suharto (the Reformasi) eras, language use has been central to the construction of a government-imposed national identity. During the New Order era, the authoritarian government passed a language law and other laws to regulate language use in printed and cinematic works. The attitude of the current government in the Reformasi era towards bahasa gado-gado, however, still imitates the New Order era by restricting the use of English and reinforcing the use of Indonesian as the official language. Currently, both the government and many Indonesians see the use of English in otherwise Indonesian texts as a sign of interference with the national identity. In this light, the top-down approach constructs national identity as homogenous, while popular texts demonstrates that Indonesian identities are in fact multi-faceted. Although bahasa gado-gado often receives social censure, I argue that its use does not make its speakers "un-Indonesian" but rather functions as a strategic mechanism to expand our understanding of what it means to be Indonesian. I shed light on bahasa gado-gado as a strategic mechanism of resistance toward policies and social norms that privilege monolingualism. My project contributes to existing research on Indonesian popular culture within literary and cultural studies, adding a new focus on discourse analysis that combines social, political, and cultural perspectives with sociolinguistic analysis. In addition, my project contributes to a small but growing body of literature on written code-switching, which has been less researched than oral code-switching in the field of Second Language Acquisition.

Anchored within current issues and debates in the field of Linguistic Landscape (LL) scholarship, this edited volume is concerned with politics of language and the semiotic construction of space in multilingual and multi-ethnic Asian countries. Spanning Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, the chapters explore how different individuals and collectivities use semiotic resources in different spaces – schools, airports, streets and shops as well as online platforms – to reinforce or contest existing social structures, bearing strong implications for language maintenance and cultural revitalization, construction of ethnolinguistic and national identities, and socioeconomic mobility. Part I looks into how globalization and its accompanying forces and influences – such as the importance of English in socioeconomic mobility – come into contact with local Asian cultures and languages. Part II examines minority languages, demographically and socio-politically established in the countries, shedding light on the role of LL that plays in both their minorization and revitalization processes. Part III investigates how LL is utilized as a site for constructing identities to pursue socioeconomic, political and cultural goals. It is within this perspective that the presence and salience of English in the LL of the countries along with the use of the Asian languages is analyzed and understood, shedding light on how Asian heritage languages and cultures are preserved and/or certain identities in the times of political unrest or economic development are expressed. This fascinating insight into linguistic landscapes in Asia will be of interest to researchers, students and policy makers in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics anywhere in the world.

Language Policy In Superdiverse Indonesia written by Subhan Zein and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Indonesia has an extreme diversity of linguistic wealth, with 707 languages by one count, or 731 languages and more than 1,100 dialects in another estimate, spoken by more than 600 ethnicities spread across 17,504 islands in the archipelago. Smaller, locally used indigenous languages jostle for survival alongside Indonesian, which is the national language, regional lingua francas, major indigenous languages, heritage languages, sign languages and world languages such as English, Arabic and Mandarin, not to mention emerging linguistic varieties and practices of language mixing. How does the government manage these languages in different domains such as education, the media, the workplace and the public while balancing concerns over language endangerment and the need for participation in the global community? Subhan Zein asserts that superdiversity is the key to understanding and assessing these intricate issues and their complicated, contested and innovative responses in the complex, dynamic and polycentric sociolinguistic situation in Indonesia that he conceptualises as superglossia. This offers an opportunity for us to delve more deeply into such a context through the language and superdiversity perspective that is in ascendancy. Zein examines emerging themes that have been dominating language policy discourse including status, prestige, corpus, acquisition, cultivation, language shift and endangerment, revitalisation, linguistic genocide and imperialism, multilingual education, personnel policy, translanguaging, family language policy and global English. These topical areas are critically discussed in an integrated manner against Indonesia’s elaborate socio-cultural, political and religious backdrop as well as the implementation of regional autonomy. In doing so, Zein identifies strategies for language policy to help inform scholarship and policymaking while providing a frame of reference for the adoption of the superdiversity perspective on polity-specific language policy in other parts of the world.

This book delves into the complex world of language policy (LP) and its implementation, examining it from various angles and contexts. The concept of LP is explored in detail, with different experts offering diverse definitions, from a body of rules and practices to a social construct. LP is shown to encompass everything from government laws to family practices, reflecting both ideologies and beliefs about language use in daily life. The book highlights the distinction between language policy and language planning, emphasizing LP's presence at various levels of society, from governmental laws to family dynamics. It is noted that not all language ideologies and practices necessarily translate into formal language policies. Each chapter in the book examines LP in different contexts, from university campuses to multinational companies, and family settings. The linguistic landscape is explored, encompassing a wide range of language practices and behaviors in public spaces. Various methodologies and analysis models, including the classification of text divisions based on Top-Down and Bottom-Up, are employed to study linguistic landscapes. Chapters delve into specific case studies, such as the influence of English on the Indonesian linguistic landscape and language contestation in a college students' culinary zone. The book also explores the role of the Indonesian language in international corporations in the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the importance of cross-cultural communication. The book aims to provide readers with valuable insights into language policy, linguistic landscape analysis, and sociolinguistic research. It serves as a resource for future researchers in social, linguistic, and cultural studies and offers society members a deeper understanding of specific areas, their language choices, and social conditions. Ultimately, the book serves as an in-depth analysis of language policy and its implications in various contexts, contributing to the field of language studies and sociolinguistics.

Most journal articles, edited volumes and monographs on youth language practices deal with one specific variety, one geographical setting, or with one specific continent. This volume bridges these different studies, and it approaches youth language from a much broader angle. A global framework and a diversity of methodologies enable a wider perspective that gives room to comparisons of youth’s manipulations and linguistic agency, transnational communicative practices and language contact scenarios. The research presented addresses structural features of everyday talk and text, youth identity issues related to specific purposes and contexts, and sociocultural emphases on ideologies and belonging. Combining insights into sociolinguistic and structural features of youth language, the volume includes case studies from Asia (Indonesia), Australia and Oceania (Arnhem Land, New Ireland), South America (the Amazon, Chile, Argentina), Europe (Germany, Spain) and Africa (Uganda, Nigeria, DR Congo, Central African Republic, South Africa). It expands on existing publications and offers a more comparative and "global" approach, without a division of youth’s strategies in terms of geographical space or language family. This collection, including a conceptual introduction, is of interest to scholars from several linguistic subfields working in different regional contexts as well as sociologists and anthropologists working in the field of adolescence and youth studies.

Gender Relations in an Indonesian Society offers a comprehensive ethnography of Bugis marriage through an exploration of gender identity and sexuality in this bilateral, highly competitive, hierarchical society. Nurul Ilmi Idrus considers the fundamental concept of siriq (honour; shame) in relation to gender socialization, courtship, sex within marriage, the regulation of sexuality between genders, the importance of kinship and status in marriage, and the dynamics of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. This analysis considers the practical combination of Islamic tenets with local adat (custom; customary law) and the effect of contemporary Indonesia’s national ideology on cultural practices specific to Bugis society.
