Machines In Our Hearts written by Kirk Jeffrey and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-01 with Medical categories.

Today hundreds of thousands of Americans carry pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) within their bodies. These battery-powered machines—small computers, in fact—deliver electricity to the heart to correct dangerous disorders of the heartbeat. But few doctors, patients, or scholars know the history of these devices or how "heart-rhythm management" evolved into a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing and service industry. Machines in Our Hearts tells the story of these two implantable medical devices. Kirk Jeffrey, a historian of science and technology, traces the development of knowledge about the human heartbeat and follows surgeons, cardiologists, and engineers as they invent and test a variety of electronic devices. Numerous small manufacturing firms jumped into pacemaker production but eventually fell by the wayside, leaving only three American companies in the business today. Jeffrey profiles pioneering heart surgeons, inventors from the realms of engineering and medical research, and business leaders who built heart-rhythm management into an industry with thousands of employees and annual revenues in the hundreds of millions. As Jeffrey shows, the pacemaker (first implanted in 1958) and the ICD (1980) embody a paradox of high-tech health care: these technologies are effective and reliable but add billions to the nation's medical bill because of the huge growth in the number of patients who depend on implanted devices to manage their heartbeats.

Exposing Electronics written by Bernard S. Finn and has been published by NMSI Trading Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Electronic apparatus and appliances categories.

This is a book for museum professionals and museology students: for serious historians who want to look beyond their usual documentary sources. It is also for anyone who is intrigued by the electronic devices that are woven into our culture (such as J A Fleming's valve, Earl Bakken's pacemaker or the supercomputers of Seymour Cray) and who sense that they have something to say about their own history. Whilst it is clear that all artefacts have the power to provoke thought, inspire action and arouse passions (as the ability of museum exhibitions to stimulate controversy shows), less well recognised or understood is the value of objects for historical research. In this volume, curators and other historians examine electronic artefacts preserved in collections around the world, demonstrating the manifold ways in which they can be employed in the study of the history of science and technology -- for example by motivating a line of research or by providing hard evidence toward the resolution of a hitherto insoluble problem. In addition, there is a section devoted to the process by which electrical items are collected and the museums in which many of them are preserved. The 'Artefacts' series is sponsored by the Science Museum in London, UK, the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, USA, with help from professional historians in other museums and elsewhere.

Telecommunication has undergone unprecedented change in recent times. Two hundred years ago, Sir Francis Ronalds foresaw its development and imagined a world of 'electrical conversations'. His subsequent creations, the most important of which include an early version of the telegraph, have had significant impact on modern living. Little recognized until now, his extraordinary legacy is brought to life through never-before published sources written by people close to the man himself. In this book, details of Sir Francis's inventions — covering areas as diverse as electrical devices, weather forecasting, photography, art, mass production, and even fishing — are interwoven with personal and professional tales of achievement. Fresh light is shone on controversies and precedence in several important discoveries. Using both anecdotal and scientific evidence, it is written for those interested in the pursuit of science in the 19th century and the fascinating developments which have proved essential to the technological revolution of the 21st century.
