Balaghah adalah salah satu bidang kajian bahasa Arab yang menyatu dengan kompleksitas kehidupan masyarakat Arab sejak sebelum Islam, disempurnakan dan diangkat ke level tertingginya oleh Al-Qur'an, dan menjadi fokus kajian yang terkodifikasi menjadi ilmu. Balaghah hadir di abad 2 Hijriyah dan mencapai puncaknya di abad ke-5 Hijriyah. Keindahan uslub Al-Qur'an dan praktik keseharian masyarakat Arab yang cinta dan bangga pada bahasanya telah menyampaikan sastra Arab pada supremasinya. Sulit untuk memadankan ‘balaghah’ dengan fan dan ilmu apa dalam bahasa Indonesia. Ia merupakan ilmu tersendiri. Bahkan balaghah, jika pun harus dikaji dalam konteks bahasa Indonesia, memiliki tiga unsur; stilistika, pragmatik, dan retorika. Jika dirinci, ilmu balaghah memiliki dua bidang yaitu al-fahm dan al-ifhâm. Al-fahm adalah kemampuan pembaca untuk memahami nilai-nilai sastrawi sebuah ungkapan. Sementara al-ifhâm adalah kemampuan penutur untuk membuat faham siapapun pendengar, pembaca, dan penikmat satu tuturan dan ungkapan. Dalam al-fahm, stilistika dan pragmatik yang sepadan dengan balaghah. Dalam al-ifhâm, retorikalah yang sepadan dengan balaghah. Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, praktik balaghah begitu menghampar. Mengungkap maksud secara oral maupun tulisan pasti memiliki tujuan. Cara menyampaikan bahasa untuk tujuan tertentu bisa dilakukan dengan aneka cara. Buku ini hadir untuk mendekatkan bahasa komunikasi sehari-hari kita dengan balaghah. Bahwa kita ber-balaghah dalam praktik berbahasa sehari-hari, bisa disadari atau tidak, yang jelas ada.

Nahjul Balaghah Jilid 1 berisi petuah-petuah Amirul Mukminin Kw. ketika ia diangkat sebagai khalifah hingga wafatnya. Petuah-petuah ini secara garis besar adalah statemen-statemen politiknya, baik ketika kekuasaannya dirongrong oleh pembela Utsman bin Affan Ra. maupun diberontak oleh pihak Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan. Di samping itu, ada juga petuah-petuah non-politis, seperti tentang akhlak, tauhid, pandangan-pandangan mengenai Ahlul Bait, dan wejangan-wejangan seputar sufisme. Dari semua petuah itu, jika kita ikuti secara teliti, maka memang benar jika Amirul Mukminin Kw. disebut sebagai Babul ‘Ilm.
