This essay sheds light on the importance of the balanced scorecard for creating business objectives and evaluating business strategies. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of companies leveraging either the french strategic measurement system or the balanced scorecard are elucidated in this essay. The eminent importance of efficacious leveraging balanced scorecards should not be overlooked. The balanced scorecard provides organizations with a robust framework for defining goals and objectives and translating them into specific measures. Objectives defined leveraging this "framework are deemed balanced by being defined from four perspectives that encompass the innovative learning perspective, internal business perspective, the financial perspective, and the customer perspective"("Enterprise Risk Management"). The value of the balanced scorecard lies in its innate ability to create measurable objective that have bearing on allowing organizations to reach their overarching goals. The key performance indicators can be produced "by making a list for each objective of what is currently measured and what else could be measured. This also subsequently involves selecting the measures that present the utmost complete indication that the objective is being achieved" ("Enterprise Risk Management"). The versatile balanced scorecard has a pragmatic use since it can measure ample facets of a business. For instance, the "internal business perspective measures of the balanced scorecard can measure an organization's core competencies, productivity, and service delivery. The financial perspective measures of the balanced scorecard allow organizations to measure the reductions of costs and risks, enhanced usage of assets, and increases in funding from different sources. The innovation & learning perspective measures of the balanced scorecard enables organization to measure the time to create change, maturity of improvements, and growth and competitive success. The customer perspective measures enable organizations to measure customer service factors important to the customer, such as time to provide service, service quality, and customer perception on their needs being met" ("Enterprise Risk Management"). The balanced scorecard enables corporations to devise measurable objectives that can be advantageous to an organization once achieved. Being able to leverage a management framework to measure various facets of the business that impact its continual success allows the company to track how successfully their employees have been at reaching strategic objectives and goals. The balanced scorecard can be modified as needed to add clarity to a strategy, update an efficacious business strategy (Kaplan And Norton, "Using the Balanced"), "align units and individual goals with the strategy; and to link strategic objectives to long-term targets and annual budgets" (Kaplan And Norton, "Using the Balanced") . The balanced scorecard allows corporations to carryout performance reviews (Kaplan And Norton, "Using the Balanced") and assess how measurable components of their business that are impacting their strategy can be enhanced. "For people to act on the words in vision and strategy statements, those statements must be expressed as an integrated set of objectives and measures, agreed upon by all senior executives, that describe the long-term drivers of success. The balanced scorecard signals to everyone what the organization is trying to achieve for shareholders and customers alike. But to align employees' individual performances with the overall strategy, scorecard users generally engage in three activities: communicating and educating, setting goals, and linking rewards to performance measures. Without a balanced scorecard, organizations are unable to achieve a similar consistency of vision and action as they attempt to change direction and introduce new strategies and processes. The balanced scorecard provides a framework for managing strategies.

The Balanced Scorecard translates a company's vision and strategy into a coherent set of performance measures. The four perspectives of the scorecard--financial measures, customer knowledge, internal business processes, and learning and growth--offer a balance between short-term and long-term objectives, between outcomes desired and performance drivers of those outcomes, and between hard objective measures and softer, more subjective measures. In the first part, Kaplan and Norton provide the theoretical foundations for the Balanced Scorecard; in the second part, they describe the steps organizations must take to build their own Scorecards; and, finally, they discuss how the Balanced Scorecard can be used as a driver of change.

Risk management is vital to organisational success, from government down to small businesses, and the discipline has developed rapidly over the last decade. Learning lessons from the good and bad practice of others is a key feature of this book, which includes multiple illustrative examples of risk management practice, in addition to detailed case studies. Combining both theory and practice, the early chapters compare the ISO 31000 and COSO Enterprise Risk Management frameworks and the relevant regulatory regimes in both Europe and the United States. The core of the book is three highly detailed case studies of risk management in the manufacturing (Akzo Nobel), retail (Tesco), and public sectors (Birmingham City Council). Using the lessons learned from the case studies, together with material from elsewhere, the author then outlines four lessons for risk managers that can be used in any organisation seeking to develop a truly enterprise-wide risk management system. This completely revised edition contains updates on regulations and practice, together with new chapters covering technology risk and COVID-19, which are major risks faced by all organisations today. As such the book is essential reading for risk management professionals and postgraduate and executive learners.
