The story of Rinaldo and Armida, where love conflicts with duty, magic plays a role, and morality wins the day, lends itself to being dramatised, and a number of librettists adapted it for the stage in the 17th and 18th centuries. In France, where the ballet de cour was the prime dramatic entertainment, the earliest adaptation of Tasso for the theatre was the Ballet du Roy danced by Louis XIII and his courtiers in the Salle du Louvre on Sunday, 29 Janary 1617. The fifteen-year-old King chose the subject from several proposed to him by Etienne Durand, the designer placed in charge of the occasion. La Delivrance de Renaud. The present publication is dedicated entirely to the study of a single ballet de cour. Its centrepiece is a modern edition of the complete livret, compiled by Etienne Durand, his Discours au vray du ballet danse par le Roy, le dimanche XXIXe jour de janvier 1617, avec les desseins, tant des machines et apparences differentes, que de tous les habits des Masques (Paris, Ballard, 1617) In the first group of articles we look at the kind of historical evidence provided by the main sources for the ballet de cour, the Vers and the livret, and the noble participants are introduced ; the second group deals with the sources of inspiration for the ballet; in the third group, we consider the music of our ballet; the fourth group deals with the scenography and other visual aspects of the performance; at the end, the last group of articles is dedicated to the dance.

The period 1300-1600 CE was one of intense and far-reaching emotional realignments in European culture. New desires and developments in politics, religion, philosophy, the arts and literature fundamentally changed emotional attitudes to history, creating the sense of a rupture from the immediate past. In this volatile context, cultural products of all kinds offered competing objects of love, hate, hope and fear. Art, music, dance and song provided new models of family affection, interpersonal intimacy, relationship with God, and gender and national identities. The public and private spaces of courts, cities and houses shaped the practices and rituals in which emotional lives were expressed and understood. Scientific and medical discoveries changed emotional relations to the cosmos, the natural world and the body. Both continuing traditions and new sources of cultural authority made emotions central to the concept of human nature, and involved them in every aspect of existence.

Dance as Text: Ideologies of the Baroque Body is a historical and theoretical examination of French court ballet over a hundred-year period, beginning in 1573, that spans the late Renaissance and early baroque. Utilizing aesthetic and ideological criteria, author Mark Franko analyzes court ballet librettos, contemporary performance theory, and related commentary on dance and movement in the literature of this period. Examining the formal choreographic apparatus that characterizes late Valois and early Bourbon ballet spectacle, Franko postulates that the evolving aesthetic ultimately reflected the political situation of the noble class, which devised and performed court ballets. He shows how the body emerged from verbal theater as a self-sufficient text whose autonomy had varied ideological connotations, most important among which was the expression of noble resistance to the increasingly absolutist monarchy. Frankos analysis blends archival research with critical and cultural theory in order to resituate the burlesque tradition in its politically volatile context. Dance as Text thus provides a picture of the complex theoretical underpinnings of composite spectacle, the ideological tensions underlying experiments with autonomous dance, and finally, the subversiveness of Molieres use of court ballet traditions.
