Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Roe are perhaps the most thrilling young duo performing today, offering adrenalized classical concerts that are revolutionizing the piano duo experience for the 21st century. Described as "Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers transposed from the dance floor to the keyboard" (The Southampton Press) and "the intense synchronization of genius" (ThirdCoast Digest), Greg and Liz bring their joyous camaraderie and refined artistry to the concert stage, dazzling audiences around the world as a four-hand and two-piano team. The Anderson & Roe Duos & Duets series features inspiring arrangements as performed by the duo---from settings of treasured opera melodies to medleys of popular movie music. The pieces are edited with fingering and other directions that facilitate rehearsal and performance, making them accessible for advancing students as well as for concert performers. "Ballet" from Orfée et Eurydice is an enchanting masterpiece. Composed by early-Classical composer Christoph Willibald Gluck, its haunting melody reflects on the tragic Greek myth of Orpheus and his failed attempt to bring his wife Eurydice back from the dead. The slow, lyrical arrangement for one piano, four hands, requires careful balance between the primo and secondo parts, as well as delicate choreography between the players' hands.

For decades, eighteenth-century Paris had been declining into a baroque backwater. Spectacles at the opera, once considered fit for a king, had become "hell for the ears," wrote playwright Carlos Goldoni. Then, in 1774, with the crowning of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, Paris became one of the world's most vibrant musical centers. Austrian composer Christophe-Willibald Gluck, protege of the queen, introduced a new kind of tragic opera--dramatic, human and closer to nature. The expressive pantomime known as ballet d'action, forerunner of the modern ballet, replaced stately court dancing. Along the boulevards, people whistled lighter tunes from the Italian opera, where the queen's favorite composer, Andre Modeste Gretry, ruled supreme. This book recounts Gluck's remaking of the grand operatic tragedy--long symbolic of absolute monarchy--and the vehement quarrels between those who embraced reform and those who preferred familiar baroque tunes or the sweeter melodies of Italy. The turmoil was an important element in the ferment that led to the French Revolution and the beheading of the queen.

“Eurydice is a luminous retelling of the Orpheus myth from his beloved wife’s point of view. Watching it, we enter a singular, surreal world, as lush and limpid as a dream—an anxiety dream of love and loss—where both author and audience swim in the magical, sometimes menacing, and always thrilling flow of the unconscious… Ruhl’s theatrical voice is reticent and daring, accurate and outlandish.” —John Lahr, New Yorker A reimagining of the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice journeys to the underworld, where she reunites with her beloved father and struggles to recover lost memories of her husband and the world she left behind.

The Six Easy Pieces arranged by German composer, conductor, and organist Christian Gottlob Neefe (1748--1798) are inspired by the original vocal/orchestral score of The Magic Flute. These pieces are idiomatic piano duets (one piano, four hands) that remain faithful to the original composition. Filled with wit and charm, they contain many of the memorable elements of the opera: Papageno's magic bells, gentle love duets, tenderhearted trios, and lively arias. Based on the 1793 first edition, Neefe's dynamics, articulations, and phrase marks have been preserved. Editorial suggestions have been given in parentheses and footnotes to aid in performance. Titles: * No. 1 ("Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja" / "Yes, I am the bird catcher") * No. 2 ("Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" / "In men who know the feeling of love") * No. 3 ("Soll ich dich, Theurer, nicht mehr sehn?" / "Shall I, dear one, never see you again?") * No. 4 ("Das klinget so herrlich" / "That sounds so pretty") * No. 5 ("Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" / "A sweetheart or a little wife") * No. 6 ("Klinget, Glöckchen, klinget!" / "Ring, little bells, ring!")

Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion, considered one of the monuments of music literature, is filled with multidimensional levels of symbolism, theological understanding, and psychological insight. In this awe-inspiring arrangement for two pianos, four hands, five movements from the original work have been carefully selected. Together they retain the dramatic arch of the story, but pare the music down to a more manageable duration suitable for performance on recitals. Two copies required.
