Celebrating one of AFL's longest-standing and most iconic traditions Have you ever wondered what makes Australian Rules Football so unique? Sure, the rules are unmistakably different to other sports, but it's the bizarre traditions and idiosyncrasies that make the game uniquely ours. One of those quirks is the team banner – an essential element of the pre-match build-up that has connected fans with their heroes for more than 80 years. The humble banner, or run-through as it's known by the purists, has become an iconic symbol of our love for the game. It's why cheer squads around the country dedicate countless hours each and every week to delicately craft their messages on crepe. This painstaking process culminates in a fleeting moment of glory as the teams run onto the ground before the banner is torn (quite literally) to shreds. From the funny to the offensive, the emotional to the political, banners come in all shapes and sizes and have evolved considerably, reflecting not only a changing cultural landscape but a changing game itself. Footy Banners: A Complete Run-Through is a collection of historical images, stories and unforgettable moments that pay homage to one of our game's longest-lasting rituals.

Y.C. Chang researched his fascinating ancestors and their lost culture to write Banners, Longhairs, and Maz - Story of a Lost Tribe. His story begins with the defending battle of the Tsapoo Banner garrison against the assault of the Longhair rebel force in about 1850 to 1860 during the Ching dynasty of China. The sole survivor of the Banner garrison, Chubtai, married an aboriginal Maz tribe girl, Ah-Wu, after she saves his life, and then returns to the triumphant Banner force. After the battle, the Maz tribe lost its culture and became integrated into mainstream Chinese society. Nothing has been heard of them since, until their last descendent - this author - made the effort to find what can be remembered from this lost tribe. The two main characters, Ah-Wu, and her husband, Chubtai, are the progenitors of the family line of the author. The other notable characters of Marshall Hsiang, The Great Man, and Chang Chia-Hsiang, the brave man, are well-known historical figures in China. Banners, Longhairs, and Maz brings a period of history lost in the mists of time back to life. About the Author: Y.C. Chang grew up in cities and provinces of North and South China until he was 27.He also lived in the United States, Brazil, Germany and several other lands before settling in Brazil. Summer 1312. The brutal murder of King Edward II's favourite, Peter Gaveston, unleashes a horde of demons . . . Sir Hugh Corbett, Keeper of the Secret Seal, hastens to the Dominican Priory at Blackfriars where Gaveston's corpse awaits burial. But, on arrival, Corbett discovers that a series of macabre murders has turned the priory into a mansion of death, and a killer is roaming free. Meanwhile, rumours spread that the pirate ships of the Black Banner Fleet are intent on entering the River Thames and, if the Sea Beggars succeed in their mission, they will weaken the king's power throughout the city. Once again, Corbett must employ his wit and ingenuity to navigate the dangerous and deadly challenges ahead and bring the culprits to justice before matters turn grave indeed. What readers say about Paul Doherty: 'Paul Doherty's depictions of medieval England are truly outstanding' 'Another brilliant story in the excellent Hugh Corbett series by a superb historical author' 'Good plots, clever twists and mostly impossible to work out'

Banners of Longing is a collection of sixty-four reflective and religious poems divided into four categories: Seasons, Sinners, Personae, and Meditations. These poems will move, console, inspire, and enlighten the reader prepared to appreciate religious and reflective verse. The poems in this collection examine everyday experiences, events, and perceptions in the light of faith. They also look—sometimes with wry humor—at familiar biblical characters in a twenty-first-century light. The collection as a whole presents a spirituality of presence, gratitude, and graceful living in the world. Including selected poems from the author’s earlier collection, Anno Domini, Banners of Longing acknowledges its many debts to such religious poets as Gerard Manley Hopkins, Mary Oliver, Denise Levertov, and Dana Gioia. The spiritual influence of contemporary theologian Elizabeth Johnson and the late Cistercian monk and spiritual writer, Thomas Merton, are also unmistakable. Many of these poems first appeared in such distinguished journals as Spiritus, Parabola, and the famed Jesuit journal, Review for Religious.
