This book addresses James Joyce’s borderlessness and the ways his work crosses or unsettles boundaries of all kinds. The essays in this volume position borderlessness as a major key to understanding Joycean poiesis, opening new doors and new engagements with his work. Contributors begin by exploring the circulation of Joyce’s writing in Latin America via a transcontinental network of writers and translators, including José Lezama Lima, José Salas Subirat, Leopoldo Marechal, Edmundo Desnoës, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, and Augusto Monterroso. Essays then consider Joyce through the lens of the sciences, presenting theoretical interventions on posthumanist parasitology in Ulysses; on Giordano Bruno’s coincidence of opposites in Finnegans Wake; and on algorithmic agency in the Wake. Cutting-edge cognitive narratology is applied to the “Penelope” episode. Next, the volume features innovative essays on Joyce in relation to early animated film and comics, engaging with animated film in the “Circe” episode, Joyce’s points of contact with George Herriman’s cartoon strip Krazy Kat, and structural affinities between open-world gaming and Finnegans Wake. Mit der kubanischen Wirtschaftskrise entstanden neue literarische Gestaltungsprozesse nationaler Identitätskonstruktionen. Die vorliegende Analyse geht der zeitgenössischen Literatur Kubas nach, in der soziale, kulturelle und politische Paradoxe der post-revolutionären Weltanschauung zum Vorschein kommen und der Figur der „Insel“ bzw. „Insularität“ eine große Bedeutung für die Neukonfiguration der Nation zukommt. Die „Insularität“ drückt in literarischen Texten verschiedene Aneignungen des Raumes und somit auch eine Weltanschauungen aus. Die literarische Figur der „Insel“ kann hypothetisch als „visuelles Phänomen“ (Ette 2002) konzipiert werden, das durch soziokulturelle Umstände konfiguriert wird. Unterschiedliche postkommunistische Erfahrungen bilden sog. „erlebnisweltliche“ Repräsentationen und somit literarische und soziale Identitätsbilder. Im Verlauf der Zeit werden die Metapher der „Insel“ bzw. der „Insularität“ anders beschrieben. Erste Untersuchungen der Metapher der „Insel“ bzw. der „Insularität“ finden sich in den Texten Noche insular (Lezama Lima 2000) und La isla en peso (Piñera 1998). Die Metapher wird in den Begrifflichkeiten der „Simulation“ und „Dissimulation“ (Sarduy 1982) oder auch einer „visuellen Erscheinung“ als „Grund-Ekphrasis“ (Pimentel 2001) beschrieben. Demgegenüber stellen spätere Arbeiten die literarische Figur der „Insel“ als ein Instrument der Dekonstruktion der Nationalliteratur Kubas dar (Rojas 1998;Nuez 1998, Benitez Rojo 1998). In zeitgenössischen Analysen wird die Metapher in ihrer jeweiligen Beziehungen zur Repräsentation und zum „Lebenswissen“ (Ette 2010) herausgearbeitet. Die Repräsentation der “Insel” bzw. der “Insularität” wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit anhand des soziokulturellen Kontextes in den letzten dreißig Jahren u.a. in den Romanen von Abilio Estevez Tuyo es el reino (1998), Atilio Caballero La última playa (1999), Daniel Díaz Mantilla Regreso a Utopía (2007) sowie den Erzählungen von Ena Lucia Portela Huracan (2000), Antonio José Ponte Un nuevo arte de hacer ruinas (2005),Emerio Medina Isla (2005), Orlando Luís Pardo Tokionama (2009),Ahmel Echeverria Isla (2014) und Anesly Negrín Isla a mediodía (2014) untersucht.

Narrativas de encierro en la República cubana se centra en el análisis de distintas representaciones literarias y culturales de la experiencia de encierro, confinamiento y encarcelamiento que marca a la sociedad cubana durante el siglo XX. Se ocupa de una clase de textos narrativos que el autor denomina como “narrativas de encierro”, cuya ubicuidad en el campo cultural cubano durante el siglo XX no ha sido hasta ahora lo suficientemente enfatizada en los estudios académicos. En contraste con los acercamientos que han destacado la centralidad del encierro, el asedio y el encarcelamiento durante el período histórico iniciado en 1959, Narrativas de encierro en la República cubana considera que la presencia de estos tres elementos se encuentra profundamente enraizada en la historia cubana y por esta razón se examina la relevancia e influencia de su representación en la configuración de la literatura y la cultura cubanas. El autor dedica particularmente su atención a la escritura testimonial y ficcional del período que se inicia en 1925 con el gobierno de Gerardo Machado y que finaliza con la consolidación del régimen revolucionario en la década de 1960. Las tres partes en que se divide este volumen destacan tres autores cuyos escritos han sido centrales tanto para el florecimiento de una narrativa de confinamiento (incluyendo las narrativas propiamente carcelarias) como para la configuración del canon de la literatura cubana durante el siglo XX: Carlos Montenegro (1900-1981), Pablo de la Torriente Brau (1901-1936) y Lino Novás Calvo (1903-1983). En torno a estos tres autores principales se analizan obras de otros autores que han sido importantes para la literatura cubana, como Enrique Serpa, y obras poco conocidas o de autores desconocidos para la mayoría de los lectores actuales.

Das Erfundene geht bei der Genese der Amerikas dem Gefundenen voraus und verändert dieses Aufgefundene so, dass in einem dialektischen Prozess das Erfundene und das Gefundene wie Fiktion und Realität sich wechselseitig durchdringen. Für ein Leben und Erleben der Amerikas bildet dies die Grundlage für die indigene Bevölkerung wie für deren „Entdecker", für die deportierten Sklaven wie für die herbeigeschafften Coolies. Die Vorlesungen zeichnen diesen faszinierenden und bis heute anhaltenden Prozess detailreich nach.
