El poeta hi va treballar intensament, però la mort liva impedir de donar-hi la forma definitiva. Amb el títol de Barcelona. Textos per a un llibre, es publiquen en aquest volum els textos que Verdaguer havia previst que en formessin part i que no havien estat inclosos en cap de les seves obres publicades en vida. Es tracta de vint-i-cinc poesies i cinc proses, totes d'un gran interès literari, social i biogràfic. El text d'aquesta edició, a cura de Francesc Codina i Valls, ha estat establert a partir dels manuscrits i de les edicions parcials aparegudesa la premsa i en fulls solts en vida de l'autor.

This manual is intended to fill a gap in the area of Romance studies. There is no introduction available so far that broadly covers the field of Catalan linguistics, neither in Catalan nor in any other language. The work deals with the language spoken in Catalonia and Andorra, the Balearic Islands, the region of Valencia, Northern Catalonia and the town of l'Alguer in Sardinia. Besides introducing the ideologies of language and nation and the history of Catalan linguistics, the manual is divided into separate parts embracing the description – grammar, lexicon, variation and varieties – and the history of the language since the early medieval period to the present day. It also covers its current social and political situation in the new local and global contexts. The main emphasis is placed on modern Catalan. This study explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia and rejects the exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness'. This study, charting the construction of a Catalan identity from the nineteenth-century cultural renaissance until the present day, explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia. Drawing on postcolonial and multicultural literary theories, it argues that Castilian- and Catalan-language narratives are expressions of the same culture. Through detailed analyses of texts by Terenci Moix, Francisco Candel, Ignasi Riera, Montserrat Roig, Juan Marsé, Ramon Pallicé, and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, among others, the author demonstrates that such writers share similar preoccupations and points of view and also engage in a complex literary and cultural dialogue that cuts across the established linguistic divisions that characterise cultural politics in Catalonia. The Catalan literary establishment's exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness' ischallenged and the author proposes redefining traditional understandings of Catalan literature to take into account texts produced by all members of Catalan society. Stewart King is a lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Monash University, Australia.

Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.

El 1895 Jacint Verdaguer treballava intensament en la seva obra: l’octubre publicava el poema Sant Francesc i els articles Un sacerdot calumniat i el desembre sortia Flors del Calvari. Tres llibres que reflecteixen la crisi que havia començat el 1893, amb la sortida cap a la Gleva, i que s’havia intensificat amb la fugida cap a Barcelona, la suspensió a divinis, el «Comunicat» i la primera sèrie d’En defensa pròpia a la premsa. El drama i les circumstàncies biogràfiques van accentuar l’evolució de la seva escriptura cap a una literatura del jo. Així, Flors del Calvari, «Llibre de consols», en termes religiosos mostra la profunditat de l’experiència viscuda. Al volum, amb un llarg i ben travat pròleg, dos interessants poemes introductoris centrats en Crist i el poeta i dues-centes vint-i-vuit composicions, hi trobem des de textos poètics que són expressió del ressentiment, matisat per la resignació cristiana («A mos bescantadors», «A un detractor», «Vora la mar»), fins als que són cants espirituals adreçats directament a la divinitat («Sum vermis» o «Al crucifix»), sense oblidar les petites corrandes religioses que poden consolar el poeta i qualsevol lector, missió de la poesia.
