Organized baseball in Long Beach dates to 1910, when the Long Beach Clothiers of the Southern California Trolley League played opponents wherever a streetcar could take them. Exhibition games later featured Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bob Feller, and other Major League barnstormers. Homegrown talent includes Baseball Hall of Famers Bob Lemon and Tony Gwynn. Pioneering entrepreneur Bill Feistner built the first accommodating baseball park in 1922 at Redondo Avenue and Stearns Street in the shadow of oil-rich Signal Hill. When ballplayers weren't on the Shell Park diamond, they worked the derricks.

Tulowitzki's arm, range and instincts at shortstop are highly regarded. Furthermore, his size, ability and leadership skills have garnered him comparisons to Cal Ripken, Jr., Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. Tulowitzki graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, California, alma mater of former Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth. He earned four varsity letters in baseball and two in basketball. He was twice named second team All-State in baseball, and was a 3-time team MVP. As a junior, Tulowitzki had a batting average of .536. He also went 15-1 on the mound. As a senior, he batted .519 with 24 home runs. In basketball, Tulowitzki won league MVP, and was second team All-State and team MVP, averaging 22.6 points per game during his senior year. He was named Fremont High Athlete of the Year in 2002. A sure-handed starting shortstop for three seasons at Long Beach State, Tulowitzki had a .962 career fielding percentage. Offensively, in 155 career games, he had a batting average of .310, with 20 homers, 117 RBIs, 37 doubles, and a .491 slugging percentage. 2001: A Baseball Odyssey began as an informative look at a season of professional baseball in Taiwan for Bo Durkac, a seven-year veteran of professional baseball. Although brief, his stint in the Orient offers a cross-cultural tale of the many differences—both on the field and off—he experienced in his search for the financial compensation unavailable to him in the USA.
