Excerpt: The (Catalan pronunciation: English: , Spanish: ), commonly known as the Sagrada Familia, is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926). Although incomplete, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 was consecrated and proclaimed a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI. Though construction of Sagrada Familia had commenced in 1882, when Gaudi took over the project in 1883 he transformed it with his architectural and engineering style-combining Gothic and curvilinear, Modernisme forms with ambitious structural columns and arches, and including a rich variety of Christian symbols in the design. Gaudi devoted his last years to the project and at the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Sagrada Familia's construction progressed slowly as it relied on private donations and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War-only to resume intermittent progress in the 1950s. Construction passed the mid-point in 2010 with some of the project's...

This well-researched, easy-to-use guide to eight Spanish cathedrals and a basilica provides profiles of each, as well as their medieval settings. The locations of these special churches range from northwest Spain, down through Castile-Leon, to Andalusia, and on up to Catalonia. Spain's historic churches present a complex mix of architectural and decorative styles: from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque--as well as important Moorish influences. They are special in other ways, for example the lavish use of gold and silver, and the great proliferation of often extravagant high altars, choirs, chapels, tombs and monuments. The Christian reconquest of the Moors played an important role. This book is designed to help those who are curious about the story behind historic Spanish churches, and would like to have some understanding of what they are seeing during their visits without getting bogged down with masses of personages and technical details. Part One provides background on Spain's architectural history, from the Romans, to the Moorish influences, focusing on those which were dominant during the Christian era. Part Two consists of profiles of the nine churches. The guide is lavishly illustrated with color photos and a floor plan with suggested visit sequence for each church.

Excerpt: Santiago de Compostela Cathedral (Galician: ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral of the archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. The cathedral is the reputed burial-place of Saint James the Greater, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. It is the destination of the Way of St. James, a major historical pilgrimage route since the Early Middle Ages. The building is a Romanesque structure with later Gothic and Baroque additions. According to legend, the apostle Saint James the Greater brought Christianity to the Celts in the Iberian Peninsula. In 44 AD he was beheaded in Jerusalem. His remains were later brought back to Galicia, Spain. Following Roman persecutions of Spanish Christians, his tomb was abandoned in the 3rd century. Still according to legend, this tomb was rediscovered in 814 AD by the hermit Pelagius, after witnessing strange lights in the night sky. Bishop Theodomirus of Iria recognized this as a miracle and informed king Alfonso II of Asturias and Galicia (791-842). The king ordered the construction of a chapel on the site. Legend...
