Step aside, Abner Doubleday! In this impeccably researched history, Robert W. Henderson uncovers the true origins not only of baseball but of a score of related sports involving hitting, catching, throwing, or kicking a ball. Henderson traces the origins of ball sports to religious rites in ancient Egypt, where the ball (perhaps a shrunken head) represented a fertility symbol and opposing teams engaged in mock combat signifying the struggle of good against evil. Centuries later, pagan fertility rites featuring the ball were adapted by the Christian church as rituals symbolic of Easter and the Resurrection. Court tennis was also firmly rooted in the church, the earliest players being the bishops, canons, and clerics who played it in their cloistered courtyards. Henderson overturns the popular belief that the game of racquets originated in the debtors' prison on Fleet Street in the early nineteenth century. He also notes that polo, the most ancient of games played with stick and ball, originated in Persia and migrated to China and India, where it was eventually embraced by English imperialists. Other sports discussed include football, lawn tennis, cricket, and golf. The most substantial portion of Henderson's study is devoted to the game of baseball. Providing copious evidence of early forms of baseball played in England and the United States before 1829, he offers a meticulous account of the legerdemain by which Abner Doubleday, the famous Civil War general, came to be identified as the inventor in 1839 of a game that was already at least two centuries old. The new foreword by Leonard Koppett affirms the significance of this classic work of sports history, which was the first to dismantle the Doubleday/Cooperstown myth.

Innovation As Clarifications written by Prateek Goorha and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with categories.

I suggest that the process of innovation can be understood broadly as comprising clarifications over values and rules. This yields four categories of innovations: progressive, ideational, practicable and prototypical. The basis for this characterization rests in the evolution of cooperative conditions in competition, which is a strong condition for an innovation process that is non-linear and recombinant. When played in teams, sports are, therefore, interesting cases; they also require the consideration of broader social conditions than do traditional markets and are based on tacit or explicit rules, traditions and social preferences. I, therefore, consider the class of bat and ball sports from a broad historical perspective as a case study to adumbrate the idea of innovation as clarifications.

"Balls are the unsung heroes of sports. They are smacked, flung, dribbled, crushed, thrown, and kicked. They're usually only the subject of scrutiny when something goes wrong: a tear, the application of an illegal foreign substance, or a dent from overuse. Nevertheless, if you're watching nearly any major sporting event from around the world, you're likely following the ball wondering where it will go next ... The Secret History of Balls mines the stories and lore of sports and recreation to offer insight into 60 balls--whether they're hollow, solid, full of air, or stuffed with twine or made of leather, metal, rubber, plastic, or polyurethane--that give us joy on playing fields and in every arena from backyards to stadiums around the globe"--

There is no unambiguous solution to the question of where baseball came from. Though uniquely American, baseball has its roots in a number of international ball sports. Bat-and-ball games were played in England long before baseball was even conceived of, and here is where the bat-and-ball idea comes in. Baseball is thought to have been influenced by games like rounders, stoolball, and cricket. In these games, players hit a ball with a bat and ran between bases, much like in baseball. Many people believe that the New York Knickerbockers Baseball Club, which was established in 1845, played baseball before any other teams. The Knickerbockers were instrumental in developing the game and establishing many of its early regulations. The Knickerbockers and a group of cricket players played the first game of baseball played according to contemporary rules in 1846. The bases were set up in a diamond formation in Hoboken, New Jersey, and each team had nine players. This contest laid the groundwork for contemporary baseball.

Sport Histories written by Eric Dunning and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-06 with Education categories.

Sports Histories draws on figurational sociology to provide a fresh approach to analysing the development of modern sport. The book brings together ten case studies from a wide range of sports, including mainstream sports such as soccer, rugby, baseball, boxing and cricket, to other sports that until now have been largely neglected by sports historians, such as shooting, motor racing, tennis, gymnastics and martial arts. This groundbreaking work highlights key debates in the analysis of modern sport, such as: the relative influence of intra-national class conflict and international conflict the relative prominence of commercially led processes in different contexts the centrality of concerns over violence differences between elite and mass-led sports developments. Above all, Sport Histories proves the distinctiveness of the figurational sociological approach and its usefulness in the study of the development of modern sport.
