'बतकही' प्रसिद्ध आलोचक डॉ. मैनेजर पाण्डेय से की गयी बातचीत की पुस्तक है। प्रचलित अर्थों में यह पुस्तक विभिन्न विषयों पर डॉ. पाण्डेय द्वारा दिये गये सत्रह साक्षात्कारों का संग्रह है; पर शैली के स्तर पर यह शुद्ध अन्तरंग बातचीत है जिसमें औपचारिकता नहीं, अन्तरंगता है। इसे स्पष्ट करते हुए डॉ. पाण्डेय ‘आमुख' में कहते हैं- 'बतकही' शब्द दो व्यक्तियों के बीच किसी भी विषय और व्यक्ति के बारे में बातचीत के दौरान सहजता, स्वाभाविकता, सहृदयता और समानता की ओर संकेत करता है। बतकही सार्थक तब होती है जब सवाल करने वाला व्यक्ति पूरी तैयारी के साथ बातचीत में भाग लेता है।" ज़ाहिर है, इस पुस्तक में बातचीत करने वाले लोग सहृदयता, सहजता, स्वाभाविकता तथा समानता के साथ लेखक से संवाद करते हैं और विविध प्रश्नों पर हुई बातचीत में अपनी अन्तरंग सहभागिता दिखाते हैं। इस स्तर पर देखें तो पूरी पुस्तक हमें अपनी प्रक्रिया में लिए चलती है और हम पाते हैं कि इसमें भागीदारी कर रहे हैं। पुस्तक में शामिल सत्रह साक्षात्कारों यानी बतकहियों में बहुत आत्मीयता और अनौपचारिकता के साथ डॉ. पाण्डेय ने अनेक महत्त्वपूर्ण विषयों पर बातचीत की है जिनमें आचार्य रामचन्द्र शुक्ल के इतिहास का तोड़ अभी तक नहीं आया, दलित स्त्री की पराधीनता तीन स्तरों पर है, मैं आलोचना को कवि और कविता से बड़ा नहीं मानता, यथार्थवादी रचनाशीलता की स्थिति अब भी बहुत अच्छी है, लेखक परम्परा से कुछ सीखते हुए नया सोचें, सम्पूर्ण अर्थ में भारतीय कवि हैं निराला शीर्षक साक्षात्कार शामिल हैं। ‘बतकही' में अनेक ऐसे विषयों पर बातचीत है जो आज के समय में प्रासंगिक हैं और हमें अपनी भूमिका की याद दिलाते हैं। आधुनिकता के प्रश्न हों या मुक्तिबोध की कविता पर विचार हो, नागार्जुन और केदारनाथ अग्रवाल के कवि-कर्म को देखना हो या मार्केज़ के उपन्यास पर विचार करना हो-डॉ. पाण्डेय साहित्य की सामाजिकता और आलोचना के दायित्व के साथ-साथ हमारे नागरिक कर्तव्यों की याद भी दिलाते हैं। कह सकते हैं कि 'बतकही' पढ़ने योग्य पुस्तक तो है ही, आज के दिग्भ्रमित समय में दिशा देने वाली भी है। -ज्योतिष जोशी
