In October 1863, the Union Army of the Cumberland was besieged in Chattanooga, all but surrounded by familiar opponents: The Confederate Army of Tennessee. The Federals were surviving by the narrowest of margins, thanks only to a trickle of supplies painstakingly hauled over the sketchiest of mountain roads. Soon even those quarter-rations would not suffice. Disaster was in the offing. Yet those Confederates, once jubilant at having routed the Federals at Chickamauga and driven them back into the apparent trap of Chattanooga’s trenches, found their own circumstances increasingly difficult to bear. In the immediate aftermath of their victory, the South rejoiced; the Confederacy’s own disasters of the previous summer—Vicksburg and Gettysburg—were seemingly reversed. Then came stalemate in front of those same trenches. The Confederates held the high ground, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, but they could not completely seal off Chattanooga from the north. The Union responded. Reinforcements were on the way. A new man arrived to take command: Ulysses S. Grant. Confederate General Braxton Bragg, unwilling to launch a frontal attack on Chattanooga’s defenses, sought victory elsewhere, diverting troops to East Tennessee. Battle above the Clouds by David Powell recounts the first half of the campaign to lift the siege of Chattanooga, including the opening of the “cracker line,” the unusual night battle of Wauhatchie, and one of the most dramatic battles of the entire war: Lookout Mountain.

A collection of first-hand accounts and reports of the air in the war Compared to accounts of conflict on land and sea, the library of accounts of the war in the air during the First World War is quite small. Many of the books written about the subject (which holds an abiding fascination for students of the earliest period of aviation and aerial combat) are published by Leonaur, including those written by the airmen themselves. This book is quite different. Its contents have been drawn from the many periodicals and part works which were published during the Great War for an eager domestic audience. This unique book contains numerous first-hand reports written by the aviators themselves, as well as those written by journalists who wrote about the war in the air. Many if not all of these have never appeared in book form before. Taken from French, German and British sources, these accounts cover many interesting aspects of the battle in the clouds. Readers will discover what the air war like from the perspective of a Zeppelin crew member, accounts of airmen above the Desert Campaign, of the bomber raids, sea-plane exploits, the German raiders over Paris and London, a view of the aerial attack on Ravenna and much more of interest on warfare in the early days of military aviation. Illustrated. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

For Bill Drumm, history is not about the past. Follow Bill as he makes history, analyzes past events, and identifies clouds of war on the horizon that are warnings to us. Share his burden of command as he pilots his B-24 heavy bomber, transporting over 2,200 gallons of explosive aviation fuel from India into China, through thunder and lightning storms over the world’s highest mountains. Experience the pressure and anxiety for the safety of his crew as he flies through the worst weather in the world, performing what has been described by many as the most dangerous missions of the war, more dangerous than bombing raids over Germany or Japan. Bill shares his experiences during the many Cold War crises during his twenty-eight years in the military. And finally, Bill looks at the events of the last few years and identifies the enemy within and the terrible threat they pose to our constitutional republic.

Get as close as you’ll get to a World War II–era P-51 Mustang without flying one yourself with this spellbinding collection of tales from the men who actually flew the planes into war.The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang first started appearing in real numbers in 1943, at the climax of the Allied campaign in World War II. Able to fly long ranges, it was the perfect escort, keeping bombers protected all the way from Allied bases in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific to a variety of Axis industrial targets and military installations and back. The Mustang would go on to provide pivotal air support on D-Day, and by the end of the war, the P-51 would be responsible for nearly half of all enemy aircraft shot down.In The Fight in the Clouds, aviation writer and EAA Warbirds of America editor James P. Busha draws on interviews conducted with dozens of veteran P-51 pilots to trace the progress of war through the men’s exciting, chronologically organized experiences. You’ll encounter: ·Mustangs tangling with Soviet-built Yaks ·A Mustang ace shooting down an Me 262 Stormbird ·An epic long-range battle over the Pacific Ocean ·And a score of other riveting accounts underscoring the P-51’s versatility and its vital importance to the Allied victoryBolstered by Busha’s own commentary and historical analysis, along with a gallery of rare black-and-white period photographs, The Fight in the Clouds offers a cockpit-seat view of one of WWII’s most celebrated aircraft and the men who bravely flew it into harm’s way.
