Pemberian antibiotik sebagai pemacu pertumbuhan atau antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) dan pengendalian penyakit dalam ransum unggas meningkat secara dramatis selama beberapa dekade terakhir di seluruh dunia. Saat ini, AGP telah dilarang hampir disemua negara karena konsekuensi negatif bagi kesehatan dan keamanan pangan yakni meningkatnya bakteri patogen yang resisten serta residu pada produk hewani. Larangan AGP dalam ransum unggas telah mendorong peneliti untuk mencari alternatif bahan aktif yang bermanfaat bagi peningkatan kinerja produksi unggas yang menghasilkan "produk bersih" tanpa residu. Berbagai aditif pakan alternatif yang berasal dari sumber alami telah dipelajari dalam upaya meningkatkan efisiensi pakan dan meningkatkan status kesehatan unggas. Senyawa aktif yang berasal dari tanaman memiliki beberapa manfaat sebagai prebiotik, antioksidan, imunostimulan atau antimikroba. Seperti bawang Dayak yang mengandung senyawa fenolat dan flavonoid. Senyawa fenolik dan flavonoid berperan sebagai antioksidan yang sangat kuat dan juga sebagai antibakterial. Beberapa turunan flavonoid seperti asam fenolat tidak menghambat bakteri gram positif seperti bakteri asam laktat (BAL), tetapi menghambat bakteri gram negatif antara lain E. coli dan Salmonella. Demikian pula, penggunaan probiotik Lactobacillus acidophilus dalam ransum unggas, telah dilaporkan mampu merombak karbohidrat sederhana menjadi asam laktat, menyeimbangkan mikroba usus dengan meningkatkan bakteri asam laktat usus dan menekan pertumbuhan bakteri patogen, meningkatkan daya cerna dan serap nutrien dalam saluran pencernaan.

We are delighted to introduce the proceeding of the first edition of the International Conference on Science and Technology (ICoST) that was held in Claro Hotel, May 2-3, 2019. It was organized by Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Islam Negeri Alauddin Makassar in partnership with Forum Dekan Fakultas Sains dan Teknologi PTKIN. The theme of the ICoST is “Roles and Challenges of Science and Technology in Guaranteeing Halal Products in the Industrial Revolution 4.0”. The Indonesian government has begun to respond this industrial change by launching the roadmap of 'Making Indonesia 4.0' as a strategy to ease Indonesia's steps to become one of the new powers in Asia in April 2018. This roadmap provides a clear direction for the movement of the national industry in the future, including a focus on developing priority sectors that will become Indonesia's strength towards Industry 4.0. The proceeding of ICoST contains the scientific research, written by the academicians, researchers, practitioners, and government elements who have the same thoughts about the effort to develop the society’s ability to adapt the advancement of science and technology in the global competition to face the industrial revolution 4.0. We are also very grateful to all keynote speakers and committee members, willing to act as referee for their time and efforts to keep our conference going well. This is an open access book.Molecular biology has given a great impact in life science investigation. The advances in molecular biology over the last several decades have boosted research and product development in many disciplines of life science, including Biotechnology and Pharmacy. This advances comprise: (1) the progression of more sophisticated techniques in molecular biology with a broad, interdisciplinary applications; (2) the expanding flow of information of technical novelties and scientific discoveries across scientific community; and (3) the development of more sophisticated software and continuously updated databases. This has changed the rationale and approach of experimentations giving rise to revolutionizing discoveries in many fields od science. It has become evident that the deregulation of molecular processes in body is associated with, and in certain circumstances is the direct cause of, a wide range of pathological conditions. It is necessary to mention the biomedical relevance of molecular biology-related investigations for drug discovery and the development of a more personalized medicine. Given the rapidly changing and continuously evolving nature of the molecular biology field, we can anticipate that the revolutionary impact of molecular biology in life sciences is only at the beginning and is far from being finished. To highlight the rapidly growing research and product development in the field of Biotechnology and Pharmacy, the 4th International Conference on Natural Resources and Life Sciences (NRLS)” themed Biotechnology- and pharmacy-driven research and product development is presented. Following the successful program of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd NRLS, we intend to hold the next two-day conference along with a one-day optional workshop in 4th NRLS, as a scientific forum for biotechnology and pharmacy researchers and product developers to discuss the recent advances in the fields and their application.
