Bearing Witness to Trauma: An Intersubjective Approach to Cross-Cultural Art Therapy for Trauma is the result of my doctoral research in which I investigated the use of therapist-made art as an intersubjective tool in cross-cultural treatment of severely traumatized refugees and clients from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. The focal subject of the investigation was a hermeneutic inquiry into how therapist-made art aided the formation of a deeply empathic, intersubjective space between therapist and client. In addition to facilitating attunement and understanding, my art served as a proxy witness to the clients' cultural and emotional experiences in relationship to their traumatization. As verified by the clients in clinical interviews, the contemplative sharing of therapist-made artwork created a visual empathic dialogue that supplemented and, in some instances, replaced verbal therapeutic dialogue. The outcomes reflected in this book demonstrate a paradigmatic shift from typical uses of therapist art to process the therapist's experiences with clients to the application of therapist art as an intervention that may facilitate a healing intersubjective space between clients and therapist.

There is evidence of the value of the therapist bearing witness to the client in therapeutic trauma work. Bearing witness empowers the client, creates space for their story to be heard and acknowledged, and invites change in the therapeutic relationship. In traditional psychotherapy, bearing witness is a two-way process between client and therapist. In art therapy the act of bearing witness is threefold because of the triadic relationship between art therapist, client, and artwork. This triad offers more opportunities to express, reflect, and bring awareness of the client's emotional state of being and the impact of past experiences. Ultimately witnessing within the triadic relationship creates an environment for the client that offers recognition, containment, and compassion. Art therapy has also been researched as an effective treatment of trauma, which makes this modality ideal for working with trauma survivors. An art therapy intern's experience of working at a trauma-informed agency and her experience of bearing witness and being witnessed as an art therapist in a triadic relationship is shared through an in-depth case study.

"Bearing Witness to the Witness examines the different methods of testimony given by trauma victims and the ways in which these can enrich or undermine the ability of the reader to witness them. Years of listening to both direct and indirect testimonies on trauma has lead Dana Amir to identify four modes of witnessing trauma: the "metaphoric mode," the "metonymic mode," the "excessive mode" and the "Muselmann mode." In doing so, the author demonstrates the importance of testimony in understanding the nature of trauma, and therefore how to respond to trauma more generally in a clinical psychoanalytic setting. To follow these four modes of interaction with the traumatic memory, the various chapters of the book present a close reading of three genres of traumatic witnessing: Literary accounts by Holocaust survivors, memoirs (located between autobiographic recollection and fiction), and 'raw' testimonies taken from Holocaust survivors. Since every traumatic testimonial narrative contains a combination of all four modes with various shifts between them, it is of crucial importance to identify the singular combination of modes that characterizes each traumatic narrative, focusing on the specific areas within which a shift occurs from one mode to another.
