Beatdom #12 is the CRIME issue, featuring essays on the criminal history of the central members of the Beat Generation - William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg, as well as stories about Herbert Huncke, the Times Square Hustler. We have interviews with Patti Smith, Amiri Baraka, and Joyce Johnson, as well as essays on Kerouac's poetry and the Zen ethic in Beat verse. There is also review of Ann Charters and Samuel Charters' biography of John Clellon Holmes, Brother-Souls. We take a detour from the Beats to look at Raymond Chandler's portrayal of Los Angeles' mean streets, and continue our exploration of crime in a number of poems and short stories by a mix of familiar and new faces.

Beatdom 16 is the MONEY issue of Beatdom, in which we look at the fictional origins of the Burroughs Millions, or rather, the trust fund that supposedly kept William S. Burroughs wealthy enough to live a life of luxury. Beyond this, we look at the childhood of Herbert Huncke, in a piece written by Hilary Holladay, and reconsider the writing styles of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. We also have essays on the lives and work of Hettie Jones and Bonnie Bremser, as well as reconsidering Kerouac's novels as early New Journalism, rather than fiction. In addition to these excellent essays, we have several short stories and Beat book reviews.

They call the Beat Generation "post-war" and apolitical but is that really true? William S. Burroughs lived through both World Wars, and was conscripted during the second. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Herbert Huncke, Carl Solomon, Gary Snyder, and Bob Kaufman all served in the Merchant Marine, while Peter Orlovsky served in the Korean War. Ginsberg is credited with inventing the phrase "flower power," and Kerouac is often viewed as an advocate of America's invasion of Vietnam. War was a part of their lives and a part of their art, yet it is seldom given consideration. In the WAR issue of Beatdom, we aim to rectify that oversight. We have an essay by David S. Wills exploring Kerouac, Burroughs, and Ginsberg's experiences with war during their lifetimes, and their literary responses. Katie Stewart tackles the influence of war through postmemory, and its influence upon second generation Beats. Philip Willey looks at how countercultures evolved in the UK given the devastation visited upon the country during WWII. Pat Thomas explores the Black Power movement and the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention. We also have poetry, fiction, and memoirs from the likes of Marc Olmsted, A.D. Hitchen, and G.K. Stritch.
