This book examines interpersonal violence in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia beginning with Native American cultures before colonization and continuing into the mid-twentieth centuries. Rather than riots or lynchings, it is concerned with more prosaic acts of physical force--a husband slapping his wife, a parent taking a birch branch to a child, a pair of drunken friends squaring off to establish who was the “better man.” Del Mar accounts for the social relations of power that lie behind this intimate form of violence.

“A page-turning book that spans a century of worker strikes.... Engrossing, character-driven, panoramic.” —The New York Times Book Review We live in an era of soaring corporate profits and anemic wage gains, one in which low-paid jobs and blighted blue-collar communities have become a common feature of our nation’s landscape. Behind these trends lies a little-discussed problem: the decades-long decline in worker power. Award-winning journalist and author Steven Greenhouse guides us through the key episodes and trends in history that are essential to understanding some of our nation’s most pressing problems, including increased income inequality, declining social mobility, and the concentration of political power in the hands of the wealthy few. He exposes the modern labor landscape with the stories of dozens of American workers, from GM employees to Uber drivers to underpaid schoolteachers. Their fight to take power back is crucial for America’s future, and Greenhouse proposes concrete, feasible ways in which workers’ collective power can be—and is being—rekindled and reimagined in the twenty-first century. Beaten Down, Worked Up is a stirring and essential look at labor in America, poised as it is between the tumultuous struggles of the past and the vital, hopeful struggles ahead. An up and down poetic ride through the life and times of an American writer living in the margins and his sometimes surrealist/situationist/realist view of the world around him. This book contains so many styles, forms, variations on themes and images that it is in a category all its own. It is apparent that this is a complete work that is the culmination of a life lived on the edge with an original voice that will sometimes echo as if it is emanating from that void that is engulfing the last bit of reality in this universe. From the early influence of Walt Whitman, Poe, Eliot, Pound, Langston Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, Bukowski, Wanda Coleman, librarians & bookstores, ruins of Hollywood & Venice Beach, history of his birthplace in Brooklyn and the place he was raised in San Bernardino, life on the road, life in prison, life strung all the way out to the interactions with today that cause the writer to keep writing in spite of it all, it is all here. A. Razor's Beaten Up Beaten Down is a trip through an experience that touches so many familiar places, yet will seem so new in its vision of this world that every reader will come away with a new perspective of their own life after reading this book. From the introduction by S.A. Griffin to the last page you will be in for a beating that you will never forget and will hopefully continue to prosper from.

Everybody has a story. When I was 21 years old, I thought I should write my life story. Why? Because I believed that I had experienced so much as a young woman, and to me, I had seen it all. Being raised in a loving church, being on TV, attending the Grammy's and music award shows, etc., little did I know that I would end up using drugs and being involved with someone who would beat me as a sport until he was satisfied. And when that satisfaction needed more fuel, the beatings escalated to threats of death. This book has been hard to get out of me. Some things are absolutely too painful or shameful for me, but here I share in-depth; so that you, my readers, may know that you, too, can overcome your past and that you are not alone. I share a lot of my entire life, my family, and events that played major roles in my life. The title, Beat Up, Beat Down and STILL STANDING, has a REAL meaning to me. I have literally been beat up, with black eyes, busted head, bumps and bruises to prove it. Beat down, well, that's a term I've used for the legal system that let me down beginning in 1986 through THE PRESENT-I'm STILL waiting on my pardon. At the time of my arrest, there was no law to protect me against someone who said he was going to kill me (now it's called a terrorist threat). From then till now, "I'm still standing," and having done all to stand, I STAND. I write this book also for several additional reasons: 1) I desire inmates to be empowered through my story and gain hope for their lives life, contributing members of society. 3) I want society to know from the pages of this book and my personal experience that the legal system can fail, and if they have a loved one locked up, not to give up on them or the legal system-because all things are possible: 4) to wake up the effects of domestic violence and to bring awareness to this issue. 5) to literally show the process of "a life saved by grace" and how I "walked it out in."

Beaten Down by Blood: The Battle of Mont St Quentin-Peronne 1918 charts an extraordinary journey from the trenches facing Mont St Quentin on 31 August 1918 through the frenetic phases of the battle until the final objectives are taken on 5 September. This is the story, oftentold in the words of the men themselves, of the capture of the 'unattackable' Mont and the 'invincible' fortress town of Peronne, two of the great feats of Australian forces in the First World War. The Author places real men on the battlefield, describing their fears and their courage and their often violent deaths. The struggle for control of the battle, to site the guns, to bridge the Somme and maintain communications are portrayed in vivid detail. The story also offers a glimpse of the men's families at home, their anxiety and their life-long grief.

"I am a fanatic about freedom. And I'm fanatical about coming at you hard in this book." Maybe you're not as free as you think you are. Even worse, you may have been duped into believing that a "balanced" life is the key to happiness (it isn't) or that a relationship with God is about layering on rules and restrictions (nope). Whether it’s media-fueled fear, something a parent or teacher said that you just can’t shake, or even the reality of dark spiritual forces bent on keeping you down, something is holding you back from the full-on freedom God intends for you. The Bible says, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Not fear. Not guilt. Not morality. Freedom. You can have the sort of joy you thought only kids could have. The day of freedom is here.
