Set in Philadelphia and revolving around a suspenseful legal case, the novel Becoming His Father's Son tells the story of Alex Hamilton's redemption. A successful, Ivy League-educated, African American attorney, Alex feels superior to other African Americans. In fact, he has achieved his success by winning racial discrimination cases--using questionable tactics--for wealthy, corporate clients. In stark contract to Alex, his physician father, "Dr. Nate" Hamilton, has been practicing medicine in the inner city for thirty years, often giving free treatment to patients who cannot afford to pay. Dr. Nate, the son of a sharecropper, grew up poor in Alabama and worked his way through college and medical school, unlike Alex who has lived a life of privilege. Alex and Nate haven't spoken to each other in years, a situation that grieves Alex's mother, May Hamilton. When Dr. Nate is accused of Medicare fraud and stands to lose everything he has worked for, he turns to his son for help. Alex makes a critical choice to defend his father; a decision based on love--and it irrevocably changes his life. His law partners scheme to maneuver him out of the firm when they learn of his father's indictment; and Alex begins to question all his former assumptions. As they work on the defense case, Nate reveals to Alex family secrets he had until then kept to himself, and father and son achieve a new understanding. The story ends with a suspenseful courtroom trial--the trial of Alex's life--and a surprise twist at the conclusion. A collaboration of Gregory P. Miller, a senior partner in the law firm of Miller, Alfano and Raspanti and author Denise Dennis, Becoming His Father's Son follows the story from Independence Hall to the North Philadelphia ghetto. The novel holds the readers' interest until the last page is turned.

Why do young men born in many small villages in Spain tend, at the end of the twentieth century, to stay there to live, often remaining unmarried, while young women from the same villages tend to leave? In Gender, Work, and Property, Nancy Konvalinka explores this phenomenon using the case of one small village in northwestern Spain, and she extrapolates her findings there to understand similar processes elsewhere in Europe. The changes in this village are analyzed and documented through long-term ethnographic research, participant observation, interviews, kinship diagrams, life-course models, and archive study in order to help bring the village alive for the reader.

Private Property And The Goddess written by Paul Richards PhD and has been published by Estuary Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-19 with History categories.

Private Property and the Goddess explores how patriarchal private property arose in ancient times when men seized the land from woman-centered cultures that grew up around the universal circle of women who nurtured humanity's children, giving rise to language and culture. Seizing the land required men to destroy the mother right basic to all Goddess cultures in which the land descended through the female line. The only way to end the mother right was through patriarchal monogamy that ended freedom for women and inaugurated the current era of misogyny, oppression and slavery. The story unfolds through the author's response to American Indian Movement leader Russell Means' assertion that Europeans, including Marxists, had proved themselves unable to respect nature and the earth. Richards chronicles his own journey growing up as a red diaper baby in Oakland, California and a radical student in the 1960s. From there he traveled through a decades long struggle which led to his discovery of the Goddess. With his growing awareness of the creative female source of life, he explores the hidden story of her suppression inside the ancient origin myths of patriarchy — inside Greek mythology and the one-God Bible. Along the way he examines “Where Marx and Engels Went Wrong.” Was there a time when our white ancestors lived in harmony with nature? How far back would we have to go to find such a time, if it ever existed at all? How did we lose respect for the natural world and for women? The answers to these questions opens the door to finding a way to change the course of history.

Property In Work written by Wanjiru Njoya and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Law categories.

The notion of property in work has deep historical roots in the common law tradition, but is yet to receive the attention it deserves. In this timely and thought-provoking book, Wanjiru Njoya contrasts ideas of ownership and property rights in English, American and European labour law, and considers their practical implications. The author's contention that shared ownership within a stakeholder theory of the firm allows better protection of both shareholders' and employees' interests in the large public corporation, puts employee-participation firmly back on the corporate governance agenda. The book offers a refreshing new perspective on how a more socially desirable balance between economic flexibility and job security may be achieved.
