Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in War-Time If there are weak stocks in the spring, the same method can be followed to unite weak ones which would otherwise spend all the summer in gaining sufficient strength, and stores to winter on, instead of giving surplus. By uniting and making one strong lot out of each two weak ones, surplus will be obtained. The next care will be to see that all stocks are headed by young vigorous queens. Excerpt from Dadant System of Beekeeping The worker bees hatch from the egg in 21 days, in ordinary circumstances. They do duty about the inside for a week, before attempting a flight outside. About the seventh day, in the after noon, they take their first flight, coming back home after having made the acquaintance of the surroundings, and remaining another week indoors. It is therefore only after 2 weeks of insect life, 5 weeks from the laying of the egg, that the worker becomes a field bee and begins to harvest honey. This is im portant to know, if we wish to get our force of honey harvesters at the right time. The worker does not live long in the busy season. Previous to the introduction of the Italian bee in apiaries of common bees, it was difficult, if not impossible to ascertain how long a worker lives. Born and bred amongst the hives, and steeped from their earliest years in the lore of their skeppist forefathers, these interesting folk seem, nevertheless, imbued to the core with the very spirit of progress. While retaining an unlimited affection for all the quaint old methods in bee keeping, they maintain themselves, unostentatiously, but very thoroughly, abreast of the times. Nothing new is talked of in the world of bees that these people do not make trial of, and quietly adopt into their daily practice, if really serviceable or as quietly discard, if the contrivance prove to have little else than novelty to recommend it. As a rule, they are reserved, silent men, difficult of approach; and yet, when once on terms of familiarity, they make the most charming of companions. Then they are ever ready to talk about their bees, or discuss the latest improvements in apiculture to explain the intrica cies of bee-life, as revealed by the foremost modern obser vers, or to dilate by the hour on the astounding delusions of mediaeval times. But they all seem to possess one invariable characteristic - that of whole-hearted reverence for the customs of their immediate ancestors, their own fathers and grandfathers. In a long acquaintance with bee-men of this class, I have never yet met with one who could be trapped into any decided admission of defect in the old methods, which - to say truth - were often as sense less as they were futile, even when not directly contrary to the interest of the bee-owner, or the plain, obvious dic tates of humanity. Excerpt from The Italian System of Bee Keeping Having been asked to edit the following notes during their original publication in the columns of the Field newspaper and their republication in the present form, I have had much pleasure in acceding to the request. The principle of the Giotto hive is not new, it being a slight modification of the leaf hive designed by Huber. Its merit lies in its simplicity and cheapness, and in the admirable manner in which it is capable of being worked with the inexpensive honey extractor or smielatore. With regard to the home manufacture of the hive, I would suggest that anyone, living within reach of a saw mill, would find it much more advantageous to obtain the pieces for each frame separately, as rods 3ft. O 1/2 in. long, 1 3/6 in. wide, and 1 in. thick, could be procured cut to the exact size, and at a much cheaper rate at a saw mill than they could be cut out of planks. It gives me much pleasure to be the means of introducing so practical and useful a system of bee management to the English public.
