Diffidare dei cartelli segnaletici: con Arbasino è la prima regola da osservare, perché ciascuno di questi ritratti ‘si morula' – direbbe Gadda – in infiniti altri ritratti, in altre imprevedibili storie. È quel che succede, alla lettera A, con Harold Acton, che fa risorgere la Firenze soavemente cosmopolita tra le due guerre, un crocevia dove si muovono Bernard Berenson, Vernon Lee, Aldous Huxley, D.H. Lawrence, Ronald Firbank, Norman Douglas, Edith Sitwell. O, alla lettera N, con il figlio di Vita Sackville-West e Harold Nicolson, Nigel: qui verremo addirittura inghiottiti da un dramma – qualcosa di simile a «un delirio dei Fratelli Marx sull'Orient Express» – che sconvolge quattro coniugi, otto suoceri e «parecchie zie cattive», con innumerevoli traversate della Manica, «nelle due direzioni, e sempre con un tempo orribile». Ritratti doppi, insomma, e molto di più: scintillanti ‘trascritture' di opere musicali e teatrali (non perdetevi il "Barbablù" di Béla Bartók, «un impotente che si diletta nel collezionismo di ninnoli Sadik e soprammobili Diabolik», né la "Carmen" di Brook, dove Escamillo è un barbiere lezioso con pronuncia «gotico-pizzaiola»), e di mirabolanti luoghi, come le residenze di Ludwig II di Baviera, che neppure un «tycoon americano degli anni favolosi» avrebbe saputo concepire. Senza contare gli ormai ‘mitici' ritratti dal vivo (la cinese Ding Ling, ad esempio, a casa della quale c'è un'aria «come fra Pupella Maggio e Paola Borboni»), le conversazioni ‘à bâtons rompus', gli affondi critici che valgono un intero libro e le scorribande fra i ‘santini' di una letteratura ahimè sfornita «di eros e di esprit e di senso della battuta»: Manzoni, Parini, Pascoli – e De Amicis, che ritroviamo a Costantinopoli, in un bagno turco, torturato da due mulatti: «Cioè, praticamente, ecco Al Pacino nel film "Cruising"».
