“A moving and inspirational tour de force!Affecting, beautifully written, it drives home the intimate horrors and ironies and the difficulty of living with the knowledge of suffering.Compelling, it takes you on a fulfilling and engaging journey.”?(The Classical Musicologist)That Beethoven's famous Letter to the "Immortal Beloved" was to Josephine Brunsvik, his one and only Beloved, is now a fact, so obvious that one wonders why – especially in America – the truth had been veiled behind so much fantastic speculation and even denunciation.Marie-Elisabeth Tellenbach, musician, musicologist, historian and a Beethoven scholar of international repute, not only clears aside all this debris, but, based on many years of meticulous research, shows that Beethoven's love of Josephine was not only reflected in his letters and diary, but left traces in his music that speak in notes what words cannot express. With explanations, annotations and amendments by the translator, John E Klapproth (author of "Beethoven's Only Beloved: Josephine!").

Her affection for the composer left her torn between love and duty the classic romantic conflict between the pursuit of individual happiness and the obligations imposed by the rigid class structure of the morbid Austro-Hungarian Empire.

200 years after Beethoven wrote a passionate love letter to a woman whose name he omitted, here is the life story of Josephine Countess von Brunsvik, the only woman whom the composer ever loved: There were at least 15 more love letters to her. She was his “Only Beloved”, his “Everything”, his “Angel”. He vowed to remain forever faithful and devoted to her – and he did. Their love was “made in Heaven” – however, there was to be no fulfilment in this life, no happy end.Josephine's fate was an extremely tragic one: Starting off as a promising pianist (with Beethoven's help), the rich and beautiful young Countess was coveted and admired by Viennese High Society. She was married against her will; her husband died suddenly and she had to look after four little children… Her affection for the composer left her torn between love and duty – the classic romantic conflict between the pursuit of individual happiness and the obligations imposed by the rigid class structure of the morbid Austro-Hungarian Empire.German-born New Zealand author John E Klapproth narrates with empathy and erudition the major biographical details of Josephine's “Journey from Heaven to Hell” and her relationship to Beethoven, showing how their love, though doomed, was ultimately the major motivating force that inspired and enabled the composer to create, despite increasing deafness and isolation, the most beautiful and lyrical music of all times. With new translations of all quoted German sources, this is a meticulously investigated treatise, based on the latest pertinent scholarly research. The in some places still popular conjecture by the American author Solomon that Beethoven's “Immortal Beloved” might have been a brief acquaintance called Antonie Brentano is exposed and discredited, as it is based on flawed interpretations and many erroneous translations. The Second, Revised Edition contains an added Introduction about "The Trials & Tribulations" (aka "The Trout in the Milk") and a complete Screen Play (of the Movie yet to be made).

The day after Beethoven’s death on March 26, 1827, his friends found, in a secret drawer of his desk, together with his will and two miniature portraits of two young women, a ten-page letter dated “July 6 in the morning,” that began with the intriguing incantation “My angel, my all, myself.” It included no address and no name of the addressee, except for the now famous my immortal beloved hyperbole, containing passionate declarations of love and was signed, “L., forever yours, forever mine, forever us.” Thus was born a biographical mystery of the artistic canon of the Western World, second only in tantalizing appeal to the identity of the person signing as William Shakespeare. Two hundred years later, biographers still have not come to a consensus on the mystery. Of the many candidates advanced in the meantime, only a few have survived in biographical literature. Stefan Romanó’s book brings the controversy to a close. It clarifies the existing evidence that has often been muddled, and at times reached the absurd, during almost two centuries of scholarly speculations. He also adds some new insights into the analysis of the evidence, thus making it easier for readers to draw their own conclusions, hopefully not different from his, namely, that only one of the candidates proposed so far fits the evidence. He also provides a substantially modified scenario from the one advanced by her proponents. Born in Romania during WWII and immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1989, Stefan Romanó is not a musician nor a musicologist. He is an engineer by formation, a man of exactitude and clear and logical thinking, qualities that served him thoroughly when he became an amateur Beethoven scholar. A long-time member of American Beethoven Society and of its French counterpart, Association Beethoven France et Francophonie, he has published in their professional journals, bringing valuable contributions to understanding Beethoven’s life and creation. His “Ending the Fifth” article answered a question that had puzzled musicians, scholars and music lovers alike for two hundred years: why does Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony end with that apparently interminable series of C major chords? He took up the pen by force of circumstance for his Beethoven’s Immortal Beloved when he realized that all the proposed solutions to the mystery relied on wild speculation and sometimes even falsifying the existing evidence.

A thoughtful and comprehensive weighing up of all the arguments presented by his friend Solomon in favor of Antonie Brentano, followed by a detailed presentation of and then a synoptic comparison with the evidence supporting Josephine Brunsvik. The latter the clear winner. Harry Goldschmidt, Beethoven scholar of international repute, made the hunt for the Immortal Beloved to the focus of an unorthodox and precisely drawn Beethoven portrait. His sovereign style is based on many years of meticulous research. With annotations and amendments by translator John E Klapproth

Beethoven written by Jan Swafford and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-02 with Music categories.

Sunday Times Classical Music Book of the Year 'Magisterial, warm, and engaging . . . A triumph of scholarship and musical affinity . . . Jan Swafford is to be saluted.' Independent Jan Swafford's biographies of composers Charles Ives and Johannes Brahms have established him as a revered music historian, capable of bringing his subjects vibrantly to life. His magnificent new biography of Ludwig van Beethoven peels away layers of legend to get to the living, breathing human being who composed some of the world's most iconic music. Swafford mines sources never before used in English-language biographies to reanimate the revolutionary ferment of Enlightenment-era Bonn, where Beethoven grew up and imbibed the ideas that would shape all of his future work. Swafford then tracks his subject to Vienna, capital of European music, where Beethoven built his career in the face of critical incomprehension, crippling ill health, romantic rejection, and 'fate's hammer', his ever-encroaching deafness. At the time of his death he was so widely celebrated that over ten thousand people attended his funeral. This book is a biography of Beethoven the man and musician, not the myth, and throughout, Swafford - himself a composer - offers insightful readings of Beethoven's key works. More than a decade in the making, this will be the standard Beethoven biography for years to come.
