This book investigates the link between human capabilities and the preconditions for social progress through an engagement with the theological anthropology of Swiss theologian Emil Brunner (1889–1966). It places Brunner’s thought in dialogue with selected contributors from the contemporary social sciences, examining approaches from economics, sociology and philosophy as put forward by Gary S. Becker, Christian Smith and Martha Nussbaum. This dialogic format helps to crystallise both agreements and differences and thus facilitate greater understanding between theology and other disciplines. Questions explored in the discussion relate to the emergence of human nature (the person) and the capabilities human beings possess, as well as how these develop in a social context. The author focuses in particular on the impact of sin (the Fall) and considers the mixed blessings of economic progress. By providing pointers on how to bring back the human person in social disciplines, the book hopes to contribute to improved understanding of the ethical dimension of social progress and human flourishing. It will be of particular interest to scholars of analytic and systematic theology, but also scholars from economics and social sciences with openness to theological engagement.

"Seitdem das Christentum in die Welt getreten ist, hat es im Abendland kein Nachdenken iiber Wesen und Wert des mensch lichen Daseins gegeben, das von dem EinfluB der christlichen Gedankenwelt v611ig unberiihrt geblieben ware."l Kaum ein anderer anthropologisch orientierter Denker un seres J ahrhun derts entspricht mehr dieser Diagnose als Max Scheler, mit dessen Namen die "philosophische Anthropologie" im engeren Sinn un- 16sbar verbunden bleibt. Die Tatsache der starken christlich-theologischen Beeinflus sung Schelers machte es notwendig, daB in unserer Arbeit immer wieder auch theologische Fragestellungen mitberiicksichtigt wer den muBten. Dies geschah, sooft die Sache es erforderte, jedoch unbeschadet der philosophischen Grundabsicht vorliegender Ab handlung. Wenn von "christlichen" bzw. Here, Michael Berra draws on the Swiss theologian Emil Brunner to redefine and rehabilitate the analogy of relationship. Basing his study primarily on Brunner's seminal work Truth as Encounter, Berra proposes that relationship ought to be the central motif for the whole of theology. He investigates the theme in light of modern relationship science, arguing that God-human interaction categorically meets the definition of a relationship, and that it is existentially intended to be intimate. Scholars and church leaders will find in Berra's approach a refreshing voice in this dynamic field.
