Excerpt from Beginners Spanish Reader: With Exercises This Beginners' Spanish Reader is designed for use as the first reading text to be placed in the hands of students of Spanish. It may be used in conjunction with a grammar text or first book, or, because of the plentiful drill exercises in points of grammar which are found in the section called Locuciones, cuestionarios, y ejercicios, some teachers may wish to use it as the sole beginning book prior to a systematic study of grammar. Needless, perhaps, to say, the teacher may use none, parts, or all of the section just mentioned, but perhaps the author may express the belief that the best results will be obtained by using the greater part of those exercises. Excerpt from A Beginner's Spanish Grammar In presenting a new Spanish grammar, the author feels that, as so many 'american students are not intimately acquainted with the ordinary facts of general or even English grammar, special emphasis and drill on syntax is the most important feature of foreign language study, whether one inclines to the direct or the grammar method. It seems important, therefore, to explain many elementary and seemingly obvious facts of language structure, avoid ing, so far as possible, technical terms. Excerpt from Spanish Tales: For Beginners In selecting these Spanish Tales for Beginners, three objects have been kept in view: (I) that they be good literature, (2) that they portray modern Spanish life, and (3) that they be interesting and not too difficult in language and thought. Some of the stories do not conform to all three rules, - the first two, for instance, do not portray modem Spanish life; but I hope that most of them will be found to conform fully. A few short lyric poems have also been included, since poetry forms an integral part of literature. Verse, moreover, is better for oral work and memorizing than prose. Spain has a rich and varied literature, from which other nations have freely drawn, - a literature that gives true expression to the life and aspirations of the Spanish people. The selections in this volume are taken from literary works that have been written in the past fifty or sixty years, and although they are inferior in some respects to the great master-pieces of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I believe that they have literary excellence, and they have, besides, the advantage of being written in the language of today and of describing present-day life. It is my greatest wish that this volume may awaken the students' interest in the civilization of Spain, and that it may serve as an introduction to the study of Spanish literature. Excerpt from A Spanish Reader: For Beginners The Spanish Reader aims to do four things: to furnish interesting, practical material for first year reading; to give the student a knowledge of the life and customs of Spain; to teach the geography, history, and literature of Spain and of Spanish America; and to equip the pupil with the linguistic accoutrements needed for an invasion of the South American business world. 1. The language of the Reader is simple, carefully graded, and idiomatic. It follows Castilian usage, the standard of the cultured Spaniard in South America as in Spain. To make the work practical, conversation abounds, although there is no lack of narrative. To make it simple, only the present tense is used in the first part of the book, all forms are given in the vocabulary, and notes are added. Thus the reading may begin the first month of school. 2. The stories treat of the fascinating life and customs of the Spanish people, - unknown to many who follow only the more frequented paths of European travel. This reading is supplemented by attractive pictures showing the scenes described, and by photographs of many Spanish works of art which are numbered among the masterpieces of the world. 3. Not only are the geography, history, and literature of Spain fascinating in themselves, but a knowledge of them and of South America is absolutely indispensable to any one who plans business dealings with our neighbors to the south. Equipped with a knowledge of these things, a student can talk intelligently and persuasively to Spanish-American acquaintances. The respect of the South Americans for literature is shown by the fact that ninety-five percent of their public men are writers. Excerpt from Beginning Spanish: Direct Method Spanish is now being taught in our schools and colleges as a living language. Our pupils should not learn merely to read and understand Spanish. The aim is now a complete mastery of the language, involving the ability to read, write, and speak Spanish. To accomplish this the authors believe that teachers of Spanish should teach from the very beginning the spoken language. By teaching the pupils Spanish in Spanish the authors believe that genuine interest in the language can be aroused and that real appreciation for the language can be acquired. Even those who study the language for purely cultural reasons can better appreciate Spanish literature and culture if they succeed in learning to speak Spanish well. Lawrence A. Wilkins' First Spanish Book, first published in 1919, is a textbook from which teachers instructing Spanish as a foreign language can work from. As its name implies, this textbook is intended to serve as a learner's introduction to the Spanish language. This is clearly a book for beginners. More experienced Spanish speakers would likely gain little from using this text. The book purports to not use a single "method" of teaching Spanish, but rather an amalgamation of various accepted methods. It should be noted that the pronunciation and vocabulary taught within is what is sometimes referred to Castilian Spanish - that is, the variety of Spanish spoken in Spain and other European countries. It is unlikely that any teacher would refer to a Spanish textbook published in 1919 while teaching a formal Spanish class. However, the information presented within is still extremely valuable. From the perspective of a Spanish language learner, this book achieves its goal. It is concise yet thorough, and provides insight into pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and context. For the extremely keen independent learner, the book also provides activities that can be completed to practice the material taught within. It is certainly nice to be provided with recommended activities to improve your skills. The book concludes with a vocabulary section, which is essentially a brief Spanish - English dictionary. While far from complete, it does contain the most commonly used words in Spanish, and is a valuable tool for the beginner.
