Sowohl die Verwendung des Begriffs "Single" als auch die dazu geh rige Lebensform haben sich in den letzten drei bis vier Jahr-zehnten in Deutschland stark ausgebreitet. Dabei gibt es in der Bev lkerung durchaus unterschiedliche Meinungen zum Single-Dasein. Schlie lich stellt dieses einen erheblichen Gegensatz zur traditionalen Lebensform der Ehe dar. Nicht weiter ver-wunderlich also, dass "(d)ie einen (...) fasziniert von Singles (sind)" (Hradil 1995, S. V) und vor allem deren Unabh ngigkeit und Selbstst ndigkeit hervorheben. Andere wiederum schrecken vor ihnen zur ck und halten sie "f r abschreckende Beispiele von Egoismus, Kontaktunf higkeit und "Sozialschmarotzertum" (Hradil 1995, S.V). Dieser Gegensatz zeigt auch schon berdeutlich, dass verschiedene Menschen verschiedene Vorstellungen vom Leben als Single haben. Und tats chlich existieren die verschiedenen M glichkeiten, ein Leben oder einen Lebensabschnitt als Single zu f hren, nicht nur in den K pfen der Menschen. Auch in der Realit t l sst sich ein breites Spektrum von Lebensweisen oder Lebensstilen innerhalb der "Single-Gesellschaft" beobachten. Die Abgrenzung von unterschiedlichen Singlearten bzw. -typen sowie verschiedene Ans tze zur Definition von Singles werden daher in der folgenden Darstellung thematisiert. Au erdem soll ein Blick in die USA geworfen werden, wo die Single-Entwicklung ihren Anfang hatte und von wo aus sie nach Deutschland kam (Hradil 1995, S.V). Weitere Gegenst nde dieser Untersuchung sind unter anderem das Freizeitverhalten der Singles sowie verschiedene statistische Auswertungen.
