Many researchers have examined religiosity, including measures of religiosity. However, researchers studying religiosity have often ignored behaviors associated with religion. The present research attempts to open up this area by constructing a measure of religiosity based completely on a study of overt behavior. The Behavioral Religiosity Inventory (BRI) determines which specific behaviors participants express as devotion to their religions and how much time they spend engaging in those religious activities. This measure of religiosity was constructed from responses given as part of focus groups, which provided valuable information about the daily religious life of college students. An exploratory factor analysis indicated that the BRI could assess three factors, Independent Activities, Ritualistic Traditional Activities, and Group Activities. Internal consistency was excellent for the overall survey, and the Independent and Group Activities factors. The measure seemed to be well supported by all evidence.

Empirical evidence demonstrating the prosocial effects of western Christian religion on church attenders has been limited. The present study evaluated the planned helping response of adults to bereavement needs in their church. The helping measures were: research packet return initiating a two dollar bereavement materials fund contribution from the researcher, money committed to the fund, and hours committed to help following a church-related death. The study was presented during rural and urban Catholic, United Methodist, and Baptist main worship services. The Religious Life Inventory (Batson, Schoenrade, & Ventis, 1993), was used to investigate extrinsic, intrinsic, and quest religious dimension effects on money and time commitments. The Inventory was scored using a three-component principal components analysis with a varimax rotation of the six religious orientation scales. Rural versus urban subjects are hypothesized to help more, with Baptists and United Methodist helping more than Catholics. Baptist and United Methodist rural subjects are hypothesized to have the highest helping levels compared to the lowest in urban Catholics. Baptists are expected to be more intrinsically oriented than Catholics with the quest and intrinsic versus the extrinsic dimensions hypothesized to predict commitments of money and time across subjects. The intrinsic dimension is expected to predict the lowest additional commitments of money, whereas the quest dimension will predict the highest money and time commitments. Data was analyzed using a .05 level of significance by correlations between variables, graphic analysis, and separate ANOVAS or multiple regressions for the variables generated. Packet return rate did not vary by setting but rural money and hours committed were higher than urban. Baptists had the lowest packet return rate and money committed while Catholics had the highest on both, with no significant denominational difference on hours committed. Baptists had higher intrinsic scores than Catholics or United Methodists but religious dimension did not predict packets returned, money committed, or hours committed. Post hoc analyses indicating a relationship between denomination and the religious dimensions were related to present results.

LAURENCE B. BROWN Nearly all the papers in this collection were prepared initially by a group of psychologists interested in the social scientific study of religion. They included some working with the mentally ill in medical, religious, or secular contexts, as well as teachers and researchers in psychology or theology. Their papers aim to test, or to reflect on, common prejudices about the links between mental health and religion, especially when they are thought to be mediated by personality characteristics. All the papers have been revised for this collection. A clear consensus emerged that religion has many positive effects, despite Wulff's (1991" p. 307) unguarded assertion that, "without ques tion the mentally disturbed are frequently attracted by religion." Any assumption that religion is necessarily a "danger" to health, or closely related to mental illness, is not supported by the evidence from carefully controlled studies that follow a social science perspective. Malony's paper, page 16 in this collection, therefore emphasizes that we must take account of the ways in which anyone's religion is integrated into their life, the functions it serves for them and their acceptance by other members of the religious and other groups to which they belong.
