This book is broken down into sections chapters, if you will from the beginning of a breast cancer experience to the end, based on my own personal experience. I tried to ensure that one could easily open the index and say What does a cancer lump feel like? and go to that chapter, or my biggest thing was I wanted to see pictures. There is a chapter for that. I would recommend the care-giving chapter to everyone. It was important for me to include as much detail in all my work. I believe knowledge is power!

This book is not intended as a document of professional nature. Due to its informal style, it resembles an essay, without the need to prove anything, and making room for a few ethical and philosophical reflections. The author offers new ideas for cancer treatment and invites her readers to engage and add their contribution to a new approach. This essay speaks directly to the patients and those around them, to the health care team, the researcher and others who may possibly be interested in the subject “cancer,” keeping an open mind as generous as possible when analyzing our questions and needs.

Two years after she underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy, Barbara Bradfield's aggressive breast cancer had recurred and spread to her lungs. The outlook was grim. Then she took part in Genentech's clinical trials for a new drug. Five years later she remains cancer-free. Her-2 is the biography of Herceptin, the drug that provoked dramatic responses in Barbara Bradfield and other women in the trials and that offers promise for hundreds of thousands of breast cancer patients. Unlike chemotherapy or radiation, Herceptin has no disabling side effects. It works by inactivating Her-2/neu--a protein that makes cancer cells grow especially quickly-- produced by a gene found in 25 to 30 percent of all breast tumors. Herceptin caused some patients' cancers to disappear completely; in others, it slowed the progression of the disease and gave the women months or years they wouldn't otherwise have had. Herceptin is the first treatment targeted at a gene defect that gives rise to cancer. It marks the beginning of a new era of treatment for all kinds of cancers. Robert Bazell presents a riveting account of how Herceptin was born. Her-2 is a story of dramatic discoveries and strong personalities, showing the combination of scientific investigation, money, politics, ego, corporate decisions, patient activism, and luck involved in moving this groundbreaking drug from the lab to a patient's bedside. Bazell's deft portraits introduce us to the remarkable people instrumental in Herceptin's history, including Dr. Dennis Slamon, the driven UCLA oncologist who played the primary role in developing the treatment; Lily Tartikoff, wife of television executive Brandon Tartikoff, who tapped into Hollywood money and glamour to help fund Slamon's research; and Marti Nelson, who inspired the activists who lobbied for a "compassionate use" program that would allow women outside the clinical trials to have access to the limited supplies of Herceptin prior to FDA approval of the drug. And throughout there are the stories of the heroic women with advanced breast cancer who volunteered for the trials, risking what time they had left on an unproven treatment. Meticulously researched, written with clarity and compassion, Her-2 is masterly reporting on cutting-edge science.

In this true story, a two-time breast cancer survivor takes you behind the scenes--medically and emotionally--as she, with her husband at her side, fights to save her life. A true love story. Linda Barrett could be any one of us. She's an ordinary woman living a wonderfully ordinary life--husband, kids, teaching, writing--totally unprepared for everything to go wrong at once. She discovers her breast cancer exactly when she starts a brand new teaching job which is exactly the same time as the release of her very first published novel. Secrets must be kept to protect that fledgling career. No secrets in the classroom, however, where her adult students out her in five minutes when they spot her wig! Nine years later, Linda is fully recovered from her first bout when cancer strikes again. She is not longer that random one-in-eight women who develop this disease. Blood tests show she's a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation. Without drastic measures, she'd be susceptible to a third or fourth cancer hit. At the heart of this memoir, however, is a love story. Cancer is merely the vehicle that exposes a marriage in full bloom. Everyone deserves a Hopefully Ever After, and that's what you'll get here.

Making Sense written by Sophie Mützel and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-06 with Social Science categories.

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and a leading cause of death for women worldwide. With advances in molecular engineering in the 1980s, hopes began to rise that a non-toxic and non-invasive treatment for breast cancer could be developed. These hopes were stoked by the researchers, biotech companies, and analysts who worked to make sense of the uncertainties during product development. In Making Sense Sophie Mützel traces this emergence of "innovative breast cancer therapeutics" from the late 1980s up to 2010, through the lens of the narratives of the involved actors. Combining theories of economic and cultural sociology, Mützel shows how stories are integral for the emergence of new markets; stories of the future create a market of expectations prior to any existing products; stories also help to create categories on what such a new market and its products are about. Making Sense uses thousands of press statements, media reports, scientific reports, and financial and industry analyses, and combines qualitative and large-scale computational text analyses, to illustrate these mechanisms, presenting a fresh view of how life-prolonging innovations can be turned into market products.
