Mobility is fundamental to health, social integration and individual well-being of the human being. Henceforth, mobility must be viewed as being essential to the outcome of the rehabilitation process of wheelchair dependent persons and to the successful (re-)integration into society and to a productive and active life. Many lower limb disabled subjects depend upon a wheelchair for their mobility. Estimated numbers for the Netherlands, Europe and USA are respectively 80.000, 2,5 million and 1,25 million wheelchair dependent individuals. Groups large enough to allow a special research focus and conference activity. Both the quality of the wheelchair, the individual work capacity, the functionality of the wheelchair/user combination, and the effectiveness of the rehabilitation programme do indeed determine the freedom of mobility. Their optimization is highly dependent upon a continuous and high quality research effort, in combination with regular discussion and dissemination with practitioners. The book intends to give a state of the art view on the current fundamental, clinical and applied research findings and their consequences upon wheelchair propulsion, arm work, wheelchair training and possible consequences of a wheelchair confined life style. Also its implications for rehabilitation, as well as alternative modes of ambulation and activity in the wheelchair confined population, such as functional electrical stimulation and its possible future developments, are dealt with.

When you look at someone in a wheelchair, the wheelchair is not always what you should see. You do not know what that person is going through or what they have been through. So, before you are quick to judge a person, just think, that could be you someday or someone in your family. It is hard enough being in a wheelchair, then to have people around you look down on you and judge you or think you have a disease. This book is to let people know how easy it is to get hurt, whether you are on your job or whether you are in a car. So, the next time you see someone with a disability, do not be quick to judge.

This book will help children to be more accepting towards children in wheelchairs. Children in wheelchairs know their capabilities and limits when participating in games and sports. It would be nice for able-bodied children to encourage children in wheelchairs to participate in the games or sports they are playing. They will enjoy being part of the group, and it will put smiles on their faces, as they will not feel that they are being pushed aside and cannot join in because of their wheelchairs. Please encourage your child to take the first step in asking someone in a wheelchair to join in a game or conversation. Every child likes to have fun and to be included.

The wishing wheelchair is children's and family 'feel good factor' story, aimed at thought provoking and inquiring minds. It covers subjects such as disability and sickle cell disease of which the main character has, due to being African. Lucy is the only one who can hear her interactive wheelchair, which more than just touch sensitive and state of the art, but it makes Lucy's wishes come true. She gets to travel to areas where she can gain a true essence of a place previously unreachable. She also gets to learn about technology used to make standing wheelchairs at the robot factory, and a visit to the environmentally friendly independent house of living. This makes Lucy realise that life can offer freedom. Parents and a dictionary might be needed for some of the longer words, yet the rest makes a playful read. But there are responsibilities that come with the fun and self discovery experiences with a spiritual vein that emerges in the story. This requires Lucy to conquer her fears, learn to give and become a proactive member of society. If this book was a film it would be the kind you would watch at Christmas or Easter that will make you laugh and cry, but hopefully leave you with something special. You might even go away and do something great yourself.
