This is the story of a handful of courageous men and their congregations who risked stable occupations, security and the approval of life-long friends to be obedient to God's call. It is also the story of every believer who is searching for the Church. Where Christ is Lord. Where holiness, human responsibility, and the sovereignty of God are preached. Where fellowship is more than a covered-dish supper in the church basement. And where fads and fashions take a backseat to apostolic worship and doctrine.

‘Martin’s book is the delighted exclamation of someone who has learnt – is learning – to swim in the ocean that is Orthodoxy: “Come on in; it is lovely here!”’Andrew Louth Until now, there has been little in the way of an accessible guide for those who seek to become or live as Orthodox Christians. A new convert himself, Martin Dudley is familiar with the questions, feelings and challenges that arise. He explains that, to grasp Orthodoxy, we must think and act as the Orthodox do. This involves suspending the Western analytical tendency and allowing free rein to the synthetic tendency, which enables us to detect a unity and perceive, however dimly, the interaction between the parts and the whole in relation to God and the Church. The author draws on a wealth of material, from the Church Fathers to straight-talking Mother Thekla, to explore the essentials of belief. He provides guidance on participating in the Liturgy, the requirements for fasting, confession and Orthodox prayer. In celebrating the culture of Orthodoxy – shaped by many different ethnicities and languages, gloriously expressed in art, music and literature – this volume fully conveys the rigour and joy of becoming and being Orthodox.

Becoming Un Orthodox written by Lynn Davidman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-31 with Religion categories.

Leaving a religion is not merely a matter of losing or rejecting faith. For many, it involves dramatic changes of everyday routines and personal habits. Davidman bases her analysis on in-depth conversations with forty ex-Hasidic individuals. From these conversations emerge accounts of the great fear, angst, and sense of danger that come of leaving a highly bounded enclave community. Many of those interviewed spoke of feeling marginal in their own communities; of strain in their homes due to death, divorce, or their parents' profound religious differences; experienced sexual, physical, or verbal abuse; or expressed an acute awareness of gender inequality, the dissimilar lives of their secular relatives, and forbidden television shows, movies, websites, and books. Becoming Un-Orthodox draws much-needed attention to the vital role of the body and bodily behavior in religious practices. It is through physical rituals and routines that the members of a religion, particularly a highly conservative one, constantly create, perform, and reinforce the culture of the religion. Because of the many observances and daily rituals required by their faith, Hasidic defectors are an exemplary case study for exploring the centrality of the body in shaping, maintaining, and shedding religions. This book provides both a moving narrative of the struggles of Hasidic defectors and a compelling call for greater collective understanding of the complex significance of the body in society.

If the divine liturgy really is as beautiful as we claim, wouldn’t more people attend? Wouldn’t the church grow? Driven by our desire for growth, we count, we analyze, we make charts, and we strategize, but often with few discernible results. That is probably the result of focusing on secondary aspects of church life. As we know, the very existence of a church is a gift of God’s presence and not the result of any particular actions taken by human beings. For that reason, church is primarily about being something rather than doing or achieving something. So the growth of the church is not reflected in ever-increasing numbers, dollars, and activities, but rather in steadily growing conformity to the divine ideal. So in order to evaluate ecclesial growth, we will first have to ask what the church is supposed to be. One answer to that question is captured in the four marks of the church given in the creed: Oneness, Holiness, Catholicity, and Apostolicity. These four characteristics serve as a matrix or framework within which we can focus on the primary aspects of ecclesial being and help it grow and become what it was intended to be.

Challenges Of Being Orthodox In Russia written by Alexandra Sellassie Antohin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Christian life categories.

"The development of the Russian Orthodox Church since the breakup of the Soviet Union has been characterized by the multifaceted meanings of religion in civil society. On a national level, the Church seems to be following two paradoxical trends: the increasing popularity of Orthodox symbols and worldview by the mainstream on the one hand, and the general low attendance of services on the other. Magadan, an urban center in the Russian Far East where no churches had been built before 1991, proved to be an ideal place to investigate this phenomenon. The city's Soviet history, when religious activities went underground and rituals were conducted in secret, created circumstances that influenced the social setting today. This culture of "hidden" practice, coupled with the necessity of many Orthodox faithful to teach themselves the traditions of the church, is a pattern that church authorities in Magadan seek to transform. The promotion of Orthodox cultural topics in the form of popular media and educational programs offered to children and adults, is one strategy on the part of church authorities to move Orthodox faithful into more official church settings, such as the Sunday service. From the perspective of the Magadan diocese, cultivating enthusiasm for cultural elements of Orthodoxy serves to remedy the problem of low participation in religious services, functioning as a version of missionization whereby cultural appreciation enable an individual to potentially realize a deeper spiritual connection to the faith and Church"--Leaf iii.
