Konsum ist nicht nur eine wirtschaftliche und soziale, sondern auch eine kulturelle Praxis. Von der Verbraucherforschung bislang kaum rezipiert, ist der Konsum in den vergangenen Jahren immer stärker in den Fokus der Kulturwissenschaften gerückt. Der 11. Band der "Beiträge zur Verbraucherforschung" befasst sich mit Ansätzen der Kulturforschung, der Designtheorie und der literarischen Rezeption des Konsums. Wenn es um ein zeitgemäßes Verständnis von ökonomischen und gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhängen geht, finden die Erträge kulturwissenschaftlicher Forschung immer stärkere Beachtung. Wollen Verbraucherpolitik und Verbraucherschutz nicht an der lebensweltlichen Realität der Konsumentinnen und Konsumenten vorbeigehen, müssen sie sich auf die vielfältigen ästhetischen Aspekte der Märkte einstellen. Durch die Veröffentlichung aktueller Forschungsergebnisse zur Konsumästhetik will der gerade erschienene Sammelband des KVF NRW dazu einen Beitrag leisten.

Nicht erst der Beschluss der Kultusministerkonferenz zur Verbraucherbildung im Jahr 2013 hat dazu beigetragen, dass in vielen Bundesländern die Einführung von schulischer Verbraucherbildung angestrebt und zum Teil auch schon umgesetzt wird. Als Bildungsziel wird der "mündige Verbraucher" genannt. Wenn das Ziel von Verbraucherbildung ist, Menschen dazu zu befähigen, mündig Bürger zu sein, dann muss sie beides leisten: Sie muss sowohl Fertigkeiten als auch Reflexionsfähigkeit vermitteln. Der aktuelle Sammelband des KVF NRW soll dazu beitragen, theoretische und praktische Aspekte der Verbraucherbildung wissenschaftlich zu fundieren und somit für die Verbraucherarbeit nutzbar zu machen. So wird zum Beispiel der Frage nachgegangen, welche Potenziale finanzielle Grundbildung birgt oder wie Kompetenzen durch verhaltenswissenschaftliche Ansätze gestärkt werden können.

This book calls for rethinking current climate, energy and sustainability policy-making by presenting new insights into the rebound phenomenon; i.e., the driving forces, mechanisms and extent of rebound effects and potential means of mitigating them. It pursues an innovative and novel approach to the political and scientific rebound discourse and hence, supplements the current state-of-knowledge discussed in the field of energy economics and recent reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Building on central rebound publications from the past four decades, this book is divided into three main sections: Part I highlights new aspects of rebound economics by presenting insights into issues that have so far not been satisfactorily researched, such as rebounds in countries of the Global South, rebounds on the producer-side, and rebounds from sufficiency behaviour (as opposed to rebounds from technical efficiency improvements). In turn, Part II goes beyond conventional economic rebound research, exploring multidisciplinary perspectives on the phenomenon, in particular from the fields of psychology and sociology. Advancing such multidisciplinary perspectives delivers a more comprehensive understanding of rebound’s driving forces, mechanisms, and policy options. Part III puts rebounds into practice and presents several policy cases and sector-specific approaches, including the contexts of labour markets, urban planning, tourism, information and communication technologies, and transport. Lastly, the book embeds the issue into the larger debate on decoupling, green growth and degrowth, and identifies key lessons learned for sustainable development strategies and policies at large. By employing such varied and in-depth analyses, the book makes an essential contribution to the discussion of the overall question: Can resource-, energy-use and greenhouse gas emissions be substantially reduced without hindering economic growth?

Consumers have become the focus of intensive economic policymaking designed to protect them from the risks and disappointments of the market.... Today, arguably no other economic actor in the advanced industrial countries--not the investor, not the worker, not the welfare recipient--enjoys a more thorough set of legal and institutional protections than the modern consumer when he or she enters the corner store."--from the IntroductionGunnar Trumbull investigates the origins of national systems of consumer protection in France and Germany, where, in the early 1970s, consumer groups and producers organized to advance their own ideas about the identity and interests of the affluent consumer. Through a comparison of eight areas of policy--product liability law, product safety standards and recall, misleading advertising, comparative product tests, product labeling, quality standards, consumer contracts, and pricing--Trumbull shows that different conceptions of the consumer interest emerged in the two countries. The result was the development of distinctive national consumption regimes, which have in turn influenced the market strategies of domestic producers. Trumbull's findings help to clarify distinctive national approaches to recent product crises--including cases of BSE and genetically modified foods. His research suggests that, in the age of consumer capitalism, national competitiveness may hinge not only on endowments of labor and capital, but also on the institutional forms of national consumption.
