Passage wil als tijdschrift de Nederlandstalige lezers en andere geïnteresseerden nieuwe perspectieven op de Europese literatuur aanbieden. In onze themanummers worden maatschappelijk en cultureel-artistiek relevante onderwerpen toegelicht doorheen de figuur en het werk van literaire auteurs die hun stempel op de wereldliteratuur hebben gedrukt. In die missie blijven we als redactie hoe dan ook geloven. Een missie is een staprichting, een te volgen weg die een bepaald doel voor ogen heeft maar tegelijk hogere ambities incorporeert. Wie meent dat een missie binnen de kortste keren kan worden gerealiseerd, maakt een grove denkfout. Een van de thema’s waar de mondiale letterkunde nooit over uitgesproken zal of mag geraken, is oorlog. Het is een partiële missie van de literatuur en de literaire beschouwing om ervoor te zorgen dat dit ongemakkelijke en bij wijlen heikele onderwerp nooit zal worden ondergesneeuwd. Aan de hand van enkele algemenere bijdragen en een paar (vaak schrijnende) cases, hebben we geprobeerd het thema in onze missie in te passen. Een van die algemene stukken is ons geleverd door Chris Spriet, kenner van de literatuur in en om de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Meer specifieke stukken zijn van de hand van Peter Altena (onder meer over de grandioos vergeten dichter Johannes van ‘t Lindenhout), Bart van den Bossche (over Luigi Pirandello en Gabriele D’Annunzio) en van Rik van Cauwelaert die zijn familielid en misschien wel Vlaanderens beste frontdichter, de eveneens al te vaak veronachtzaamde August van Cauwelaert belicht. Willem G. Weststeijn en redactielid Ivo van Strijtem bekijken de Russische kant van de zaak, Marco Daane bewandelt de hem vertrouwde Britse paden. Ook mogen we ons verheugen over de wel erg speciale bijdrage van ons nieuwe redactielid Lotte Loncin: een interview met de vooraanstaande Oekraïense auteur Boris Chersonskij.
