Ben-Hur (Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ) è un romanzo storico scritto nel 1880 da Lew Wallace. L'opera fu tradotta in varie lingue e pubblicata in tutto il mondo, finendo con il vendere più di cinquanta milioni di copie. Il protagonista è Judah Ben-Hur (in italiano detto Giuda), un ebreo che vanta origini nobili. La vicenda narrata si svolge in Palestina 21 anni dopo la nascita di Gesù. Ben-Hur ha 17 anni e incidentalmente fa cadere una tegola proprio in testa a Valerius Gratus, console dell'impero romano. In quell'occasione si sente tradito da Messala, suo compagno che assiste a tutta la scena e non fa nulla per impedire l'arresto. I soldati arrestano sia Ben-Hur che la sua famiglia, con l'accusa di tentata rivolta nei confronti di Roma e il ragazzo viene condannato ad essere schiavo sulle navi romane, come rematore, mentre sua madre e la giovane sorella di nome Tirzah sono imprigionate. Durante uno scontro notturno con i pirati, Ben-Hur salva Quintus Arrius dalla morte. Quest'ultimo lo adotta e lo nomina erede come ricompensa delle sue azioni. In cerca di informazioni sul destino dei suoi parenti Ben-Hur si reca ad Antiochia dove conosce Esther, la figlia di Simonide, e i due si innamorano. Al circo di Antiochia, prende parte alla corsa di quadrighe a cui Messala partecipa e riesce a sconfiggerlo. Nello scontro però il carro di Messala rimane agganciato dalla ruota di Ben Hur finendo in pezzi e mandando Messala contro i suoi cavalli che lo travolgono, ferito gravemente, non muore. Tornato in Palestina, Ben-Hur riesce a trovare il luogo in cui sono rinchiuse sua madre e Tirzah. Liberate, scopre che sono state infettate dalla lebbra, ma sul Monte degli Ulivi incontrano una folta schiera di fedeli che si avvicinano a Gesù che guarisce le due donne con un miracolo. Ben-Hur sposa Esther, che lo rende padre. La storia finisce con l'incontro fra Ben-Hur e Gesù sul Golgota, inchiodato ad una croce, poco prima della morte, da qui la sua conversione al Cristianesimo.

The conference "Laser Science and Technology" was held May 11-19, 1987 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 12th conference organized by the Internatio nal School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. This volume contains both the in vited and contributed papers presented at the conference, covering current research work in two areas: new laser sources, and laser applications. The operation of the first laser by Dr. Theodore Maiman in 1960 initia ted a decade of scientific exploration of new laser sources. This was fol lowed by the decade of the 1970s, which was characterized by "technology push" in which the discoveries of the 1960s were seeking practical applica tion. In the 1980s we are instead seeking "applications pull," in which the success and rapid maturing of laser applications provides both inspiration and financial resources to stimulate additional work both on laser sources and applications. The papers presented in these Proceedings attest to the great vitali ty of research in both these areas: New Laser Sources. The papers describe current developments in ultra violet excimer lasers, X-ray lasers, and free electron lasers. These new lasers share several characteristics: each is a potentially important coher ent source; each is at a relatively short wavelength (below 1 micrometer); and each is receiving significant development attention today.
