Excerpt from Ben Jonson and Shakespeare Now if this statement is intended to mean (and I can assign no other reasonable significance to the words) that we know more about the life of Shakspere of Strat ford than we know about that of any poet contemporary with him, there is an audacity about it which is really quite sublime; indeed the proverbial one step between the sublime and the ridiculous seems here to have entirely disappeared. Excerpt from Ben Jonson's Plays, Vol. 1 of 2 The greatest of English dramatists except Shakespeare, the first literary dictator and poet-laureate, a writer of verse, prose, satire, and criticism who most potently of all the men of his time affected the subsequent course of English letters: such was Ben Jonson, and as such his strong personality as sumes an interest to us almost unparalleled, at least in his age. Ben Jonson came of the stock that was centuries after to give to the world Thomas Carlyle; for Jonson's grandfather was of Annandale, over the Solway, whence he migrated to England. Jonson's father lost his estate under Queen Mary, having been cast into prison and forfeited. He entered the church, but died a month before his illustrious son was born, leaving his widow and child in poverty. Jonson's birthplace was Westminster, and the time of his birth early in 1573. He was thus nearly ten years Shakespeare's junior, and less well off, if a trifle better born. But Jonson did not profit even by this slight advantage. His mother married beneath her, a wright or bricklayer, and Jonson was for a time apprenticed to the trade. As a youth he attracted the attention of the famous antiquary, William Camden, then usher at Westminster School, and there the poet laid the solid foundations of his classical learning. Jonson always held Camden in veneration, acknowledging that to him he owed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Stagery of Shakespeare Moreover I see no reason to introduce extraneous problems by comparisons with plays written for performance under circum stances which have no parallel in Shakespeare, as those by Ben Jonson for the Children of the Chapel. The single exception I have made is to Show the use Of the device of discovery. This involves, Of course, an attempt to establish the continuity Of practice which connects the practice of drawing curtains on the Elizabethan Stage with that, of drawing scenes on the Restoration Stage. The Jonson Allusion Book written by Jesse Franklin Bradley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-05 with Drama categories.

Excerpt from The Jonson Allusion-Book: A Collection of Allusions to Ben Jonson From 1597 to 1700 Moreover, in the period following the Restoration the editors have had to exercise a certain discretion in condensing allusions and passing over those possessing little or no significance. Most of these, however, have been collected, and, if the opportunity offers, may later be published by way of a supplement. Perhaps it should be added that the numerous jingling rhymes printed by W. R. Chetwood in his Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Ben Jonson, 1756, have been entirely ignored; Chetwood cites no authority for them, and they seem to be crude fabrications of his own Muse. Mr. Bradley originally undertook the task of gathering these allusions in the preparation of a doctoral dissertation at Cornell University, and to him belongs the major credit of collecting and transcribing the passages. Later Mr. Adams became associated with him in the labor, and assumed specifically the responsibility of editing the material for the reader. It has not always been easy to fix the dates of the passages quoted, or to identify the authors; and in dealing with such a mass of detail, it has doubtless been impossible to escape errors. For all such defects the editors crave the indulgence of scholars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Critical Examination of the Poetic Genius of Ben Jonson In asserting that this prologue touches with spirit as well as with humour on the defects and absurdities of the old stage, 'that Lyly, Kyd, and others are evidently pointed at, Giflord is surely mistaken and every impartial reader will willingly admit that Jonson is speaking of his own times, when he says that he loved the old stage not so much as to dare serve the ill customs 'of the age, i. E. The agc'in which he lived. That this must be the case follows from, the unmistakable allusion to Shakespeare's historical plays, representing th ar of the roses, of which no less than four plays (richard III. 1593, Richard II. 1594 and Henry IV. In two parts 1598) had been written and performed, when, Every man in hjs humour was acted on the stage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
