The Dead Father is a gargantuan half-dead, half-alive, part mechanical, wise, vain, powerful being who still has hopes for himself--even while he is being dragged by means of a cable toward a mysterious goal. In this extraordinary novel, marked by the imaginative use of language that influenced a generation of fiction writers, Donald Barthelme offered a glimpse into his fictional universe. As Donald Antrim writes in his introduction, "Reading The Dead Father, one has the sense that its author enjoys an almost complete artistic freedom . . . a permission to reshape, misrepresent, or even ignore the world as we find it . . . Laughing along with its author, we escape anxiety and feel alive."

This is the legacy-memoir of Minutus or "the insignificant one," first met at fifteen when he leaves Antioch for Rome, as his destiny intertwines with new sect of Christianity. He survives the eras of Emperor Claudius and Nero, long his friend; he travels from his native Antioch to Britain to Corinth and finally to Jerusalem; he takes a hare-priestess in Britain, cohabits for years with Claudia, the emperor's daughter out of wedlock, a Christian convert; marries and divorces the savage Sabina; and loves perhaps only Antonia, Nero's half sister. Though he witnesses his father and stepmother's conversion, follows the life of Paul (Saul) of Tarsus very closely, is privy to and part of the dreadful persecution of both Jews and Christians, he is only persuaded toward Christianity at the end of his life. One of the chief pleasures of this novel is its exploration of physical properties of life as it was lived, in one of the most unruly eras of all time.

No other city in the world could compare with it in grandeur, splendor, and wealth. And when it fell to the Turks in 1453, it must have seemed like the end of the world to Christians. Famed author Mika Waltari takes us into the last months of this dying city as revealed in the diary of John Angelos, a strange man hopelessly in love with the daughter of an eminent Byzantine official. In this powerful novel which closely follows actual historical events and personalities, Waltari explores the passions and follies of a civilization on the brink of disaster. With shrewd psychological insight, Waltari provides us with an unbelievable tapestry of false hopes, dogged determination, and fanatic Muslim religious faith as seen through the eyes of the 15th century Greeks and Italians who valiantly defended the city to the bitter end. With chaos and despair deepening into a pall of gloom, the sultan's huge army surrounds Constantinople and assaults its massive walls. We peer over the shoulder of John Angelos as he dons his armor and plunges into the tumultuous events taking place amid smoldering suspicions of betrayal and assassination. But as always, the beautiful Anna Notaras lingers in his imagination. "Today I am called a spy and the lover of the empires most desirable woman. But no one knows my true identity and no one ever shall. For it is the year 1453; and here in Constantinople a mighty Christian empire is dying brutally as the Muslim hordes storm its massive wall." The sweeping, powerful story of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire in 1453 and a hopeless love affair—these are the background for this intimate and exciting historical novel.

A postmodern Victorian novel about faith, knowledge and our inner needs. The late 1870s, the Kentish village of Downe. The villagers gather in church one rainy Sunday. Only Thomas Davies stays away. The eccentric loner, father of two and a grief-stricken widower, works as a gardener for the notorious naturalist, Charles Darwin. He shuns religion. But now Thomas needs answers. What should he believe in? And why should he continue to live? Why Peirene chose to publish this book: 'This is Peirene's most poetic book yet. A tale of God, grief and talking chickens. Like Dylan Thomas in Under Milk Wood, Carlson evokes the voices of an entire village, and, through them, the spirit of the age. This is no page-turner, but a story to be inhabited, to be savoured slowly.' Meike Ziervogel 'The translation is terrific and the author's grasp of England circa 1880 is utterly convincing.' Sally Vickers, Observer 'It's hard to believe this novel originated in another country. But it did, and the way Carlson shows us to ourselves should make us wonder.' Nicholas Lezard, Guardian 'Allow layers of meaning to emerge after you finish reading, and you may be rewarded.' Harriet Paterson, Tablet 'The collective consciousness in this novel is an amazing choir: Carlson makes the souls of Downe Parish sing.' Helsingin Sanomat 'Carlson writes beautifully, wisely and with effortless humour.'
