Le côté original et singulièrement séducteur de ce désert d'hommes qu'est une grande ville, c'est précisément que l'individu y échappe au contrôle de l'entourage, mieux que dans quelque coin de province où tout, sens et esprit, se rétrécit, aux limites d'un étroit horizon... Là, on peut savoir, - et on sait consciencieusement - quand, où, avec qui le prochain a mangé ou bu, a été à la promenade ou au lit... tandis qu'ici, les gens qui habitent sur la rue ne savent pas même, bien souvent, qui loge sur la cour, et, à plus forte raison, ce que font les locataires ; il y a à Berlin des maisons qui hébergent des centaines de familles et des milliers d'individus. Mais, ce qui, dans une capitale, échappe au profane, l'oeil exercé du connaisseur le saisit d'autant plus aisément, qu'en l'absence de toute contrainte, chacun s'y étale, au naturel. Et c'est ainsi que celui qui sait remarque bien vite dans les rues et les lieux publics de Berlin, outre les hommes et les femmes, au sens reçu du terme, des personnages parfois qui par leurs manières, souvent même par leur mise, se différencient au point, qu'entre le sexe masculin et le sexe féminin, il a fallu créer un vocable spécial pour le troisième sexe.
