Here is the second edition of our history book about the Lakeside & Marblehead Railroad, a seven mile Ohio short line. While it began life in 1886 as a sparsely traveled passenger hauler, it soon became one of the most profitable and interesting railroads in the country. Using 0-6-0 steam switch locomotives, the L&M consistently hauled more tonnage and earned more revenue per mile than many larger and more boastful roads. Investors built the Lakeside & Marblehead to serve the burgeoning lime industry of Marblehead and heavy seasonal passenger traffic to Lakeside, the Marblehead Peninsula’s seasonal resort, but it was slow going at first. The railroad had nearly perished when the Kelley Island Lime & Transport Company, a prosperous basic materials company, merged it, along with area stone quarry operations, into one of the world’s largest limestone production facilities. Using the L&M and an extensive narrow-gauge stone transportation system at Marblehead, the company supported steel production by annually sending millions of tons of flux stone to furnaces across the Midwest. Although the Lakeside & Marblehead closed in 1964 and the owners tore it up in 1997, this book brings nearly every aspect of the line back to life, preserving it for posterity. The whole story in all its variety is here: 0-6-0 switch engines, Fairbanks-Morse and McKeen gasoline motor cars, scores of Shay narrow gauge locomotives, a car ferry, the boat loading dock at Marblehead, all the quarry’s stone production plants, accidents and collisions, and the line’s famed sharing of facilities with the Toledo, Port Clinton & Lakeside Railway electric interurban line. Created through careful study of the railroad’s original documents, this fascinating book contains over 50,000 words of text, 130 photos from the area’s best-known railroad photographers, 45 schedules and illustrations, 13 custom maps, 11 tables of fascinating statistics, and two unique paintings, making it a decisive portrait of one of the best short railroad lines ever built.

In Abandoned Tracks, W. Thomas Mainwaring bridges the gap between scholarly and popular perceptions of the Underground Railroad. Historians have long recognized that many aspects of the Underground Railroad have been mythologized by emotion, memory, time, and wishful thinking. Mainwaring’s book is a rich, in-depth attempt to separate fact from fiction in one local area, while also contributing to a scholarly discussion of the Underground Railroad by placing Washington County, Pennsylvania, in the national context. Just as the North was not consistent in its perspective on the Civil War and the slavery issue, the Underground Railroad had distinct regional variations. Washington County had a well-organized abolition movement, even though its members helped a comparatively small number of fugitive slaves escape, largely because of the small nearby slave population in what was then western Virginia. Its origins as a slave county make it an interesting case study of the transition from slavery to freedom and of the origins of black and white abolitionism. This restoration of a portion of the original track of theLexington and Ohio (now Louisville and Nashville) Railroadlaid at Lexington in 1831, is dedicated to those men offorethought and courage who were pioneers in railroaddevelopment in America. May 30, 1916 College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering University of Kentucky During the month of July, 1915, there appeared in a local newspaper an account of the finding of "Old Rail Stones" and "Old Strap Iron Rails" which had been used in the construction of the railroad generally known as "the old Lexington and Frankfort Road," though it was incorporated under the name of the "Lexington and Ohio Rail Road." It is believed by many to have been the first railroad west of the Alleghany Mountains. Be that as it may, the quaint and interesting relics had just been dug up that week by the workmen who were reconstructing the freight yards of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The workmen were moving more recently laid tracks back to the old original road bed of the pioneer railroad, and in doing so they unearthed those curious relics of 1831. Although just starting that very day for a summer vacation, I hurried down town a little before train time, and went to the Main Street offices of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad where the interesting relics were on display. As I stood gazing at that worn and rusty bar of iron with its single bent and rusty spike, I was whisked back across the years by some strange trick of memory and I saw, instead, a dimly lighted sick room, on a hot summer night-myself a little sufferer, and sitting beside me, fanning my fevered brow, my beloved father, who, notwithstanding the fatigue of a heavy and exacting practice sat thus night after night, soothing me to sleep by telling me entertaining stories of his youth, and as he was born one hundred and one years ago, the strange experiences of his boyhood were thrilling indeed to his youthful adorer. And so, I saw in my mind's eye that familiar room of my childhood-the open window, the breezes blowing the curtains to and fro, the moonlight casting strange shadows on the terrace outside, and I heard again that voice which has meant so much to me telling how "when the first railroad started" and all the people had gathered from far and near "to witness its departure," he and a group of fellow students from Transylvania University, mounted on fast horses, galloped ahead "to see if the Wonderful Thing could round the curve without running off the track"; and how "it came in sight, thundering along, puffing out clouds of black smoke, the engineer adding to the confusion by incessantly blowing his shrill whistle," all of which so terrified his horse, he had great difficulty in keeping his seat, but yet, how tremendously impressed he was by the "gallant way in which the gentlemen seated in the coach raised their stovepipe hats in greeting as they passed by like a streak of lightning." He said the locomotive had been invented by his old friend Tom Barlow, in whose honor he had named our Tom Barlow, his favorite race horse. He also said the old locomotive looked like a "thresher engine mounted on a flat car," and that the coach was for all the world like an "omnibus with seats on top as well as inside," and furthermore, he added, when it had been proved safe he rode upon it himself, and then "rode home on horseback" (a distance of thirty miles) to tell his mother all about it....

Throughout American culture and through varying mediums, railroad tracks have been depicted as tropes of socioeconomic repression, technological development, and even bountiful migration. For instance, Joseph's Millichap, in Dixie Limited (2002), details the symbolic use of the railroad in Southern literature and culture; he details the work of various writers such as Faulkner, O'Connor, Wolfe, Ellison, and Welty. Darcy Zabel, in The (Underground) Railroad in African American Literature (2004), also focuses on the symbolic use and meaning of railroads in literature but specifically to literature garnered by black American writers. There has also been discourse on the broad concept of the "railroad track syndrome." They are usually in the form of nonfiction narratives. In them, the "syndrome" may also be referred to as and/or correlated to the concept of "the other side of the tracks." The train tracks in West Greenville that intersect 5th Street (formerly Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive) serve as the focal point for this area-specific illustration of the railroad track syndrome and the other side of the tracks. The aim here is to exemplify, through a collection of creative nonfiction essays and photographs (all photographs can be viewed at www.latasharjones.com), the obvious divide demarcated by Greenville's train tracks, the implied and explicit impacts that the divide has had on the communities in question, and, finally, the personal connections that I have drawn from it all.
