Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754) var en rebel, der provokerede både universitet, centralmagt og præsteskab, og nok gik han, satiriker som han var, helt ud til kanten i sin udforskning af menneskenes galskab og verdens absurditet, men samtidig besindede han sig. Middelvejen forpligtede ham, han vidste, hvor truet den er. Holberg bragte menneskesindets ”sælsomme kaos” frem i lyset, han var en eminent psykolog. Adskillige af de komedier, Holberg digtede, er verdenslitteratur. Og som tænker kæmpede han for tolerance mellem religionerne, for udstrakt ytringsfrihed og for kvinders ligeret. For at bevare hans banebrydende livsværk som en levende realitet må det udforskes og beskrives, og det er netop, hvad dr.phil. Ole Thomsen gør i Besindig rebel, hvor han åbner for et nyt syn på Holbergs fængslende tankeverden. Til det formål er Holbergs selvbiografi, nyoversat fra latin af Ole Thomsen, en uudtømmelig kilde, og det er første gang, den spiller så fremskudt en rolle i et værk om Holberg.
