In a remote English estate in the mid-19th century, an inexperienced young governess is given charge of two beguiling orphans—an eight-year-old girl and a ten-year-old boy. Immediately, she must confront secrets in the house: why was the boy expelled from his boarding school? and what was the fate of the previous governess? And then the house seems to be haunted by ghosts. Are they malevolent former denizens of the household bent on the children’s destruction? Or something else? Henry James, the Master of American letters, who had a special love for ghost stories, takes supernatural horror a step further in one of the true masterpieces of the genre. This Top Five Classics edition of The Turn of the Screw features the 1898 text of the novella in book form, as well as the illustrations by John La Farge and Eric Pape that accompanied its initial run in Collier’s Weekly. An informative introduction and author bio are also included. Cover illustration by Stephanie Brown

A nice edition with 9 illustrations from the original publication in Collier's Magazine in 1898. The Turn of the Screw is an 1898 horror novella by Henry James that first appeared in serial format in Collier's Weekly magazine in 1898. Classified as both gothic fiction and a ghost story, the novella focuses on a governess who, caring for two children at a remote estate, becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted. In the century following its publication, The Turn of the Screw became a cornerstone text of academics. The novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. The novella has been adapted numerous times in radio drama, film, stage, and television, including a 1950 Broadway play, the 1961 film The Innocents, and a 2020 modern adaptation named The Turning. The title "turn of the screw" refers to making a story more terrifying and dramatic by having a child threatened. It is a reference to the old-fashioned thumbscrews used for torture.

So monstrous was I then ready to pronounce it that such a child as had now been revealed to me should be under an interdict... What it was most impossible to get rid of was the cruel idea that, whatever I had seen, Miles and Flora saw 'more' – things terrible and unguessable and that sprang from dreadful passages of intercourse in the past.

This volume presents the text of the New York Edition of James's classic 1898 short novel along with critical essays that read "The Turn of the Screw" from contemporary reader-response, psychoanalytic, gender, and Marxist perspectives. An additional essay demonstrates how several critical perspectives can be combined. As in the first edition, the text and essays are complemented by biographical and critical introductions, bibliographies, and a glossary of critical and theoretical terms. Two of the six essays are new to the second edition, as is a selection of cultural documents and illustrations.

About Author: Henry James OM (15 April 1843 - 28 February 1916) was an American-British author regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism, and is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. He was the son of Henry James Sr. and the brother of renowned philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. He is best known for a number of novels dealing with the social and marital interplay between emigre Americans, English people, and continental Europeans. Examples of such novels include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and The Wings of the Dove. His later works were increasingly experimental. In describing the internal states of mind and social dynamics of his characters, James often made use of a style in which ambiguous or contradictory motives and impressions were overlaid or juxtaposed in the discussion of a character's psyche. For their unique ambiguity, as well as for other aspects of their composition, his late works have been compared to impressionist painting. His novella The Turn of the Screw has garnered a reputation as the most analysed and ambiguous ghost story in the English language and remains his most widely adapted work in other media. He also wrote a number of other highly regarded ghost stories and is considered one of the greatest masters of the field. In the century following its publication, The Turn of the Screw became a cornerstone text of academics who subscribed to New Criticism. The novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. Many critics have tried to determine the exact nature of the evil hinted at by the story. However, others have argued that the brilliance of the novella results from its ability to create an intimate sense of confusion and suspense within the reader. This book tells the story of a governess who, caring for two children at a remote estate, becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted.James published articles and books of criticism, travel, biography, autobiography, and plays. Born in the United States, James largely relocated to Europe as a young man and eventually settled in England, becoming a British subject in 1915, one year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912 and 1916.source: Wikipedia Product Description: The Turn of the Screw is an 1898 horror novella by Henry James that first appeared in serial format in Collier's Weekly magazine (January 27 - April 16, 1898). A young woman starts working as a governess at the isolated estate of Bly outside London. There, she is greeted by the two orphaned children she is to take care of, an ambiguous housekeeper, and an icy, supernatural atmosphere. Soon, a couple of peculiar figures begin to appear unannounced, and a creeping horror tightens its grip on both the governess and the reader. The Turn of the Screw is one of the most classic ghost stories of all time, written by the master of the psychological novel, Henry James. Perhaps more than anyone from his time, James came to inspire our modern horror mythologies, from the image of innocence as evil to schizoid labyrinths a la Roman Polanski. HENRY JAMES [1843-1916] was born in New York but emigrated early to Europe. He is one of the most important names in Anglo-Saxon literature, renowned as a great stylist and as a link between the Victorian era and modernism. Among his most famous novels are The American [1877], Portrait of a Lady [1881], and especially The Turn of the Screw [1898].
