Das Christentum – von Beginn an wesentlich vom Freiheitsgedanken bestimmt – hat die westlichen Gesellschaften entscheidend geprägt und kann auch auf aktuelle Fragen nach der Freiheit Antworten geben. Gegenwärtig ist allerdings keineswegs eindeutig, was jeweils mit "Freiheit" gemeint ist. Der Begriff ist klärungsbedürftig. Dieser Band vereint exegetische, hermeneutische, systematisch-theologische, empirische und ökumenische Perspektiven auf das Thema. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden Studien zur Freiheit im Neuen Testament, insbesondere in der Theologie des Paulus und der Paulusrezeption, in den Evangelien und weiteren neutestamentlichen und frühchristlichen Schriften. Gemeinsam zeigen sie die Vielschichtigkeit biblisch-christlicher Freiheitsverständnisse auf, die gleichwohl übereinstimmend Freiheit als einen qualifizierten Begriff erscheinen lassen: Freiheit ist bestimmt durch die Bindung an Gott und realisiert sich in einem neuen Selbst-, Welt- und Gottesverständnis sowie hieraus entspringender Verhaltensmöglichkeiten. In present discourse, however, it is often unclear what is meant by "freedom". The term is in need of clarification. This volume combines exegetical, hermeneutical, systematic-theological, empirical and ecumenical perspectives on the topic. Studies on freedom in the New Testament, especially in the theology of Paul and the reception of Paul, in the Gospels and other New Testament and Early Christian writings build the main focus. Together they demonstrate the complexity of biblical-Christian understandings of freedom, which nevertheless show agreement in bringing freedom as a qualified concept to the fore: Freedom is determined by the connection to God and is realized in a new understanding of oneself, the world and God, and in behavioural possibilities arising from this.

English summary: What is freedom? Are humans free? And are God and human freedom compatible? These questions are raised by Anselm of Canterbury in his dialogues on freedom. Katrin Konig interprets Anselm's theory of freedom in its theological and historical context and brings it into a dialogue with contemporary analytic theories of freedom. Thereby a qualitative concept of freedom as a gift towards the good is contributed: gifted freedom. According to this understanding, freedom is something greater than individual self-determination or choice between alternative possibilities. It is grounded in the perception of truth, unfolded in the love of justice and compatible with perfect determination by the action of God. In this horizon it is possible to discern the aporia of the modern debate on determinism and to reconcile seeming contradictions. German description: Was ist Freiheit? Ist der Mensch frei? Eingeordnete Freiheit compares Origen's notion of freedom of choice with the concepts of contemporary philosophers. The first chapter deals with the philosophical problem of freedom of choice throughout the history of Greek philosophy. In the second chapter Origen's writing on this topic is assembled, translated, analyzed and commented upon. The comparison between Origen and his contemporaries leads in chapter three to the conclusion that Origen's concept of freedom differs especially from the philosophical perspective, since human freedom does not stand in opposition to the inevitable pattern of the pronoia or heimarmene but to Gods care for every individual. Chapter four shows that the notion of oikonomia in Christian theology is based on the concept of providence in Origen.
