This book's purpose is to highlight the development challenges and successes of implementing the Youth Climate Change Adaptation Development Framework in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Over the past decade, Sierra Leone has experienced a series of development challenges, including internal conflict and Ebola outbreaks in most recent times. The dire unemployment situation in Sierra Leone is compounded by the emergence of climate change that negatively impacts all aspects of daily life and wellbeing, and the education and training provided do not prepare young people adequately for the job market. Therefore, building youth resilience to adapt to the impact of climate change and other development problems is a significant development challenge faced by policymakers in Sierra Leone. The government, through funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB), has provided support for the implementation of a Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Project (YEEP) to reinforce the employability of Sierra Leone Youth as well as enhance their entrepreneurship and employment skills through the development of a framework that integrates education and vocational institutions with job market demand and supply. This approach has resulted in strengthening the occupational levels in the youth population segments of the country. This book discusses the objectives and outcomes of this project, including curricula for Sustainable Construction, training of counselors and administrators, providing youths with supervisory skills, and developing tools to assess youth development institutions' weaknesses and enhance institutional capacity to deliver climate change adaption for sustainable development programmes. The book can be used by policymakers from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and LDCs in Africa and Asia. It can be used by researchers working on Climate Change, Education, Sustainable Development, emphasising Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development in both developing and developed countries. It can also be used by practitioners involved in implementing innovations in youth development, employment, entrepreneurship, sustainable livelihoods initiatives, climate change adaptation, and mitigation. These practitioners and researchers would find this book an invaluable resource to support their work in the field.

About 550 registrants from 51 different countries attended the Seventh Ottawa Conference on Medical Education and Assessment in Maastricht. We received 525 abstracts for the conference, divided in thematic poster sessions and platform presentations. Organising the conference was an honour and we tried to meet the high standards of a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which has characterized previous Ottawa conferences. During and after the conference about 250 papers were submitted for publication in the conference proceedings, leaving us little time for a post-conference depression. Despite the large number of papers, the editors have attempted to review and edit the papers as care fully as possible. Occasionally, however, correspondence exceeded reasonable deadlines, preventing careful editing of a small number of the papers. Although we felt that our editorial task was not quite finished, we nevertheless decided to include these papers. We thank the many authors for their enthusiastic and prompt response to - occasionally tedious - editorial suggestions and requests. We are sure that this collective effort has resulted in a book that will make an important contribution to the field of medical education. The editors want to thank Jocelyn Flippo-Berger whose expertise with desk top publishing and perseverance was a great help.

This is an open access book. Cultural policy plays a crucial role in shaping societies, influencing cultural expressions, and advancing sustainable development. Laws and regulations related to culture, both at the national and international levels, play a key role in regulating and protecting cultural heritage and supporting a healthy cultural ecosystem. The First International Conference on Cultural Policy and Sustainable Development (ICPSD) aims to explore the impact of cultural policies in democratic and nondemocratic regimes. This conference will serve as a platform for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss strategies to promote cultural diversity, creativity, and sustainability in different political contexts.Internationally, various agreements such as the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions underscore the importance of cultural policies in supporting sustainable development and promoting cultural diversity (UNESCO Convention 2005, n.d.). At the national level, laws such as the Cultural Law in Indonesia establish a framework for the protection and development of culture, as well as provide a legal basis for inclusive and sustainable cultural policy-making (Law Number 5 of 2017 concerning the Advancement of Culture, n.d.).In democratic regimes, cultural policies are often developed through participatory processes, reflecting the values and aspirations of diverse communities. These policies aim to support cultural expression, protect cultural heritage, and promote cultural rights, thereby contributing to social cohesion and inclusive development. However, challenges such as funding limitations, cultural commodification, and the impact of digital technology require ongoing dialogue and innovation in policy approaches. On the other hand, cultural policies in nondemocratic regimes are often used as tools for political control, censorship, and the promotion of state ideology. Nevertheless, cultural practitioners and activists in these contexts demonstrate resilience and creativity in navigating restrictive environments, often using digital technology to amplify their voices and preserve cultural identity. In various countries, existing legislation greatly influences the implementation of cultural policies and sustainable development. In Indonesia, for example, Law Number 5 of 2017 concerning Culture serves as the main foundation for the development of sustainable cultural policies. This law promotes the protection, preservation, development, utilization, and fostering of culture as an integral part of national development (Law Number 5 of 2017 concerning the Advancement of Culture, n.d.).Cultural Policy and Sustainable Development are interrelated concepts and are the main focus of this conference, where appropriate cultural policies can strengthen sustainable development, reinforce cultural identity, and improve the quality of life for communities. In the context of the conference theme, Cultural Policies in Democratic and Nondemocratic Regimes, it is important to consider the differences in cultural policy approaches between these two types of regimes. This forum aims to facilitate communication among Law Faculty Academics worldwide with the agenda of the 1st International Conference on Cultural Policy and Sustainable Development (ICPSD): “Cultural Policies in Democratic and Nondemocratic Regimes”.
