ettina Lockemann: Contact Zones is being released in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart. Lockemann's works stand out due to the unspectacular gesture they make within the world of contemporary photography. The superior quality of the images, their contextual complexity, and their precise conception attest to the way the artist reflects on the aesthetic and theoretical parameters of photography. Lockemann explores a number of social issues in her extensive series. She shifts attention to urban situations, constructs of globalization and the Other, politically defined spaces, or scenarios involving control and surveillance. As always, her primary pursuit is the investigation of the relationship between image and reality.

Visual Culture Revisited written by Ralf Adelmann and has been published by Herbert von Halem Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-05 with Social Science categories.

Is there one visual culture or are there multiple visual cultures? On the one hand, it is obvious that images do not exist and cannot be understood independently. Rather, they are embedded in institutions and cultural contexts. This common ground suggests an understanding of visual culture as a singular phenomenon. On the other hand the plurality of pictorial representations - from Sitcoms to illustrations in childrens' books, from cartoons to satellite photos, from high art to everyday life - suggests the conception of visual culture as a singular phenomenon to be misleading. The visual world is a field of conflict and tension between self and other, mainstream and counterculture. The articles in this book include both theoretical reflections on the dialectics of visual culture(s) as well as case studies. The focus lies on examples from the U.S. American context - from the focusing on Native Americans as the 'Vanishing Race' in the 19th-century Photography to the TV coverage of the Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster in February, 2003. This book is therefore highly recommendable to both students and scholars of American Studies als well as those interested in the interdisciplinary debate on visual culture(s).

Speak The Wind written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Iran categories.

On the islands in the Strait of Hormuz, off the southern coast of Iran, there is a common belief that the winds can possess a person, bringing illness and disease. The existence of similar convictions in some African countries suggests that the cult may have been brought to Iran from southeast Africa through the Arab slave trade. This history is rarely spoken about but these winds and the traces they have left on the islands and their inhabitants are the touchstone for Hoda Afshar's Speak The Wind. Through her subtle and perceptive images of the extraordinary landscapes, the people and their rituals, Afshar's beautiful and complex book attempts to picture the wind and its psychic entanglements, to form a visible record of the invisible.

Jim Dine Electrolyte In Blue written by Jim Dine and has been published by Steidl this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-30 with categories.

In Jim Dine?s bluntly honest words, Electrolyte in Blue is a ?long hate poem? about ?the evil in our now small world and those who unleashed it,? exploring themes of anti-Semitism, racism, climate change, as well as the world leaders he condemns, strong among them Donald Trump. Dine?s fury and disappointment are clear, yet his vision is not merely bleak. He lays his words over luminous etchings, aquatints and lithographs of botanical themes in buoyant color. Luscious foliage, flowers, fruit and vegetables celebrate the natural world and offer solace against the social, political and environmental concerns which Dine voices. The book is based upon the original Electrolyte in Blue, a unique book object in an edition of one, typeset and printed by hand by Ruth Lingen, with whom Dine has collaborated for decades. All in all Electrolyte in Blue is a macabre and glorious document, dark and light, full of compelling contradictions, and with Dine?s ?dilemma of trying to stay human and alive under the present circumstances? at its center.

A Shimmer Of Possibility written by Paul Graham and has been published by Steidl this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Artists' books categories.

"First published in late 2007, Paul Graham's a shimmer of possibility was quickly hailed as "one of the most important advances in contemporary photographic practice that has taken place in a long while" and marked a paradigm shift in the medium. The first edition redefined what a photobook can be. Comprising 12 individual hardback books in an edition of 1,000 copies, it sold out immediately. This second edition brings together the 12 books in one single volume at an accessible price. Loosely inspired by Chekhov's short stories, a shimmer of possibility comprises a series of photographic short stories of everyday life in today's America. Each story is a small sequence of images, such as a man smoking a cigarette while he waits for a bus in Las Vegas, or a walk down a street in Boston on an autumn afternoon. Often two, three or four sequences intertwine in a single chapter, like separate but related lives co-existing in suburban America. Sometimes the quiet narrative breaks unexpectedly into a sublime moment - while a couple carry their shopping home in Texas a small child dances with a plastic bag in a garden; as a man cuts the grass in Pittsburgh it begins to rain and the low sun breaks through to illuminate every raindrop. These filmic haikus avoid the forceful summation we usually find in photography, shunning any tidy packaging of the world into perfect images. Instead, life simply flows around and past us while we stand and stare, quietly astonished by its beauty and grace. The radical form of this work is reflected in the book's sequences, giving the flow of life precedence over conclusiveness, where nothing much happens, but nothing is foreclosed either, where everything shimmers with possibility." -- Publisher's description

The Photofilmic written by Brianne Cohen and has been published by Leuven University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-03 with Photography categories.

Mapping the possibilities of photofilmic images This book explores the multifarious ways in which art, cinema, and other forms of visual culture respond to a digitized and networked world. Traditional discourses on medium specificity, developed in distinct disciplines, often fail to provide an adequate description of the transformations that photography and film have undergone. The essays, written by internationally renowned scholars, encompass a broad range of different forms such as video, documentary film, cinema, photography, and the Internet, as well as varied fields such as art history, film studies, photography theory, visual culture studies, and media theory. In this way they deal with heterogeneous practices or techniques ranging from panoramas, drone surveillance, tableau vivant, press coverage, computer-based editing, digitized financial markets, and various concepts such as temporality and contemporaneity, eco-aesthetics and forensic practice, countervisuality, human rights and political imagination, social transparency and control, thus charting the possibilities of the continuous border-crossing movement between photographic and filmic images within contemporary art and visual culture. This volume also contains, as an artist’s contribution, a substantial and richly illustrated interview with Eric Baudelaire. Contributors: Eric Baudelaire (Paris), Brianne Cohen (Amherst College), Stefanie Diekmann (University of Hildesheim), Evgenia Giannouri (Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle), Lilian Haberer (University of Cologne), Jana J. Haeckel (UCL), Ágnes Pethö (Sapientia University of Transylvania, Romania), Eivind Rossaak (National Library of Norway), Linda Schädler (ETH Zurich), Terry Smith (University of Pittsburgh), Alexander Streitberger (UCL), Hilde Van Gelder (KU Leuven).
